Just a really quick, simple question. I am beginning my first novel and really have no idea how the publishing industry works. It so happens that the main character in my story is an author and, having finished his manuscript, I wonder if someone could tell me who he would take it to. Would be an agent, his publishers, an editor . . .

If the author is established, it would go to his agent (if he has one) or his editor at the publisher (if he doesn't).

If he's a first-timer, he gets to go through the whole query and submissions process.
