Alright, so I've found an interesting publisher who buys short fiction in my genre. It's an e-publisher, but they are legitimate, according to my research. They offer a paper contract and pay their writers and only take electronic rights.

I'm wondering if it is wise to submit to them, even so. Do any of you have experience with this sort of thing? I read that even legit e-publishers might not actually do much for a writer overall because print publishers largely discredit them. Is this true? And if so, should authors avoid even legit e-publishers?

Thanks.

If your goal is to make money the top e-publishers will do this--but check whether these guys are just liked, or liked and making their writers money. If your goal is to impress a print publisher there are only 1 or 2 epublishers that may acheive that goal.

When you say top e-publishers do you mean the romantica publishers because isn't that the e-publishers who really make the money these days?

Jose:)

My only real experience is romantica and erotica epublishers--so that is sho I am thinking of. There may also be decent sellers in other areas--I bet some non-fiction areas do quite well.

Short mystery fiction is a whole other ball of wax - there are legit online epublishers for short mystery fiction - suggest you check out the Short Mystery Fiction Society for more info (SMFS sponsors the Derringer Awards) and your local Sisters in Crime chapter.

Short science fiction venues abound in cyberspace - many of them paying professional rates and submitting for major awards. Check the SFFWA website for a list of professionally-paying publications in that genre and you will see many of them are ezines.

Short westerns - okay you got me there - I don't know of any web-based venues.

Kate: Short mysteries? Sounds great to me. I love writing mysteries. And short stories. Thanks for the input!
I'm going to look into the mystery short stories and I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Veinglory: Romantica--I've been published in a short story, but to do anymore did not appeal to me. I don't read them and so I don't write them. I envy you if you can because right now it's hot hot hot--good for you.

Cheers

For speculative fiction (as mentioned earlier) there are a lot of fairly respected ezines. Heck, Ellen Datlow used to edit the SCI FI channel's online fiction (for some stupid reason (I assume money) they dumped it, but she had some great stories there and it was only available online). I know many sffwa members who openly list ezines on their resume.

I was assuming we were talking epublishers (selling pdfs) not ezines (available online). Yes there are plenty of ezines especially for spec fic and some pay quite well.

Sorry. I should have been more specific. The reference made in my first post was to an epublisher. But the discussion seemed to drift toward ezines as well.
