IRCs may be purchased at the local post office.

Last time I tried to buy an IRC at a local US post office no one in the building knew what the heck I was talking about.

Yes. The same thing happened to me. I live in a city and tried three different post offices. Finally one knew what I was talking about, but was out of them and didn't know how to use them.

It seems to me buying European stamps online may actually be easier than buying the IRC in our own country.

But you have to know what the airmail postage is to the country you live in. I got a friend to send me US stamps for my SASE but she sent me normal 1st class stamps. I had to check with three other people before I was able to confirm that this would NOT be enough and find out the correct amount - I had to get more stamps to make up the 84 cents postage.

Postage from the UK to the US is I think 72 pence - but I wouldn't likke to swear that and I can't find out for you now as I'm not in Britain. It's seventy-something.

The following may give you an idea of postage costs from the UK to the US:

http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/jump2?mediaId=600025&catId=400043 (scroll to the end for a standard price list)

http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm/content1?catId=11200122&mediaId=9300094 (find International Services in the middle of the page for relevant links)

http://sg.royalmail.com/portal/rm/PriceFinder;jsessionid=M0YTQSXDOB5F0FB2IGGEOSQ;jsessionid=M0YTQSXDOB5F0FB2IGGEOSQ?catId=23500532&gear=pricingcalc (price finder -- enter your destination (UK / Overseas ) and the package's weight)

Hope these help.
