Well... after years of thinking about it, talking about it and worrying about, I have finally decided this will be the year I will do it.

I'm going to muster up my nerve and start submitting queries again, and this time I have resolved not to give up when I am buried under piles and piles of rejection slips.

I launched a web site design and development company in 1995. Talk about rejection! WooooHa! "Go away kid, the internet is just a fad.." So I guess I learned to be persistant from that experience.

Oh no... I'm not counting on freelance writing to support me. I have spent too much time and effort building a well-respected web site design company.

But I figured, what the heck? I do all the writing for my web clients .. why not try writing without all the coding, graphic design and programming issues? It might be fun.

Oh, and talk about being particular about the placement of a semi colon? Try leaving just one out of a 30 page cgi script! Actually, don't try it, it will drive you crazy.

At least I know I have a snowball's chance in hell of actually getting published in print. Nothing like keeping the expectations low, eh?

It is like diving into an ice cold lake. Brrrrr!!!

Welcome, Bay. Nothin' cold about the waters here. Pull up a seat and tell us what kind of writing you're into; genre fiction, magazines or newspapers...?

Thanks for the warm welcome all!

While I'd love to write sci-fi short stories, I am well aware of my limitations. For now I'll just stick to reading and enjoying them.

Soooo... going to start out with the kind of writing I've been doing on the web. Non-fiction articles.. setting my aim high by putting together a travel query for Sunset Magazine this week.

Hey, I have a question about that maybe you guys can help with. They want an e-query, sent to the travel dept., e-mail, but don't provide an editor's name. Furthermore, there are no less than THREE travel editors. So who do I address the query to? Just pick a name or what?

Dear Travel Editor:
Dear Mr. Fish:

Or leave that part out entirely?

Hi there and welcome to AW--see my answer on freelance writing board . . .

May I make a suggestion? Try writing non-fiction about your area of expertise . . . it is a good foot in the door and a popular subject! That is what I did, and it worked for me-
Get a few clips, then branch out some more . . .

Just a thought for you to chew on!
