someplace around here, anyone seen my keys?

Hi!
The other day Medievalist and I were chatting about reading up on the Hugo Nominees since we're both attending LA con IV (The 64th annual World Science Fiction convention) and will be able to vote for the Hugo Awards.

I thought it might be fun to see if anyone wanted to talk about the books, stories, etc. they'd read. I've posted a portion of the list (for the rest go to the LA con site).

I'm currently reading Old Man's War and recently finished Spin. I want to read the rest, hope I have time - ballots have to be cast by July 31st!

Anyway, please join the thread whether you're going to the con or not - what do you think about the Hugos? Would knowing a book or story was a Hugo winner influence whether or not you'd read it? What about SF conventions - any stories to share?

I hope if you're going you will let me know - we're going to try and hook up with as many AWers as we can find - so far it's a pretty short list!

Best Novel

(430 ballots cast.)
Best Novella

(243 ballots cast.)
Best Novelette

(207 ballots cast.)
Best Short Story

(278 ballots cast.)
Best Professional Editor

(293 ballots cast.)
John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer

[Not a Hugo. An award for the best new writer whose first work of science fiction or fantasy appeared during 2004 or 2005 in a professional publication. Sponsored by Dell Magazines.]
(186 ballots cast. There are six nominees due to a tie for fifth place.)

I'll admit it. I haven't read a single one.

I did just finish Soul Mountain by Gao Xingjian and the love poetry of Antal.

I'm still trying to catch up with the nominees of a few years ago...

I read "The Little Goddess" by Ian McDonald and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's certainly worthy of an award, but since I haven't read any of the others, my opinion is just a favorable review.

ETA: I wish I could attend the con. I do, I do. But alas, I cannot. Maybe another year I can.
