Hi everyone,

It's so tempting to just jump right in and fire off a million questions. It's amazing how something that's not covered in any book anywhere plagues me everyday....but first I'll introduce myself properly.

My name is Rose and I live in Boise, Idaho, with a a quirky basset hound and a man who's allergic to garlic. Yes, I drink/need a lot of wine. I'm a full-time freelance writer with 6 published articles and 10 more slated for ink this year.

For the record, I did not "make the leap" into full-time freelancing. I was pushed. Well, shoved. I wrote proposals at XYZ company for the past six years, but they closed the Boise office in July 2004 and, voila!, now I'm a freelancer. See my First $ale story in the Jan 2005 issue of ByLine magazine for the ugly details. It's all right there on page 15!

Nice to meet you!

Welcome, Rose. Congrats on making the leap, here's hoping you have a long and successful freelance career.

PS -- LOVE Basset Hounds, give 'im a scratch behind the ears for me.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcomes!

Note to ChunkyC - I've written several essays about my basset Howard. One of them should be published in March...of course, the magazine first told me it'd appear last December. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Do you have a basset? Personally, I think Slobbery Beast would have been a better breed name!

Do you have a basset?

No, actually, I have two cats. I do love dogs though. There's just something about Bassets that makes you want to shout "Low bridge!" whenever you see one. :b

Hi Rose,

You are gonna like it here--it will grow on you.

Welcome to the Cooler!

I had a basset when I was little. He was adorable, but we had to find him a new home when we moved. Those are a lot of memories.

My husband and I have a crazy cocker spaniel/chow mix and the wimpiest pit bull alive. I am also surrogate mom for about 4 dogs in the neighborhood.

Basset puppies are SO cute! But that's the great thing about those dogs, they still look goofy and sweet when they grow up.

So, am I the only one here hoping to crack the pet markets? I know they're notoriously low-paying, but I spend so much time researching Howard's "problems" I may as well spin it off into an article. You know, if he doesn't have a bump somewhere, he's itching, or sneezing, or doing something that's going to cost me $60 for a vet visit.

Pets...........

Welcome Rose/neighbor. I'm in the Southeast corner of Wa. Pets are a big part of my family and I mean big. 3 cats, a black German Shep, a white German Shep and an Irish Wolfhound.
Hope you enjoy.

Hi, Rose!

Boise is my favorite place I ever lived! I lived there for 5 years, mostly on the North End. I love the way it has everything you could want or need in a city, but still retains its small-town feel. Clean, low crime...beautiful! Welcome to AW, and we'd love to have you come visit us on the Goals and Accomplishments board.

Re: Re: Hello from Boise, Idaho

Drop by the "Writing about Animals" forum as well. Lots of good stuff and great folks there.

More friends! This is the best. There's a writing about pets forum? How did I miss that?

One more thing - Melina is right. Boise (and especially the North End) is an incredible city. For good or ill, I now consider it something of a "cash cow," too. I've sold three articles about Boise, and hopefully more will follow.

Of course, my basset hound Howard is another of my potential "cash cows." I've submitted a bunch of personal essays about him...I can't believe the phone isn't ringing off the hook. How can any editor resist that face!

See ya the Pets and Goals forums.

I hear you! My birds have been earning their way since the late eighties! They've been the subjects of many print magazine articles, and essays in more than a dozen anthologies. And one of them, my Amazon parrot Pancho, is a model. His picture often accompainies my print articles. LOL!

I'll see ya in the writing about animals board. :)

RoseReifsnyder

Hi Anne,

I wish I could say Howard is earning HIS keep...soon, right? It's great that you frequently publish essays and articles about your birds. See ya in the pets forum. Rose

Welcome! Glad you're here. I used to write about pets, but that seems so long ago. I'll have to check out that pets forum. ;)
