What's the best way to find out who was agent for a particular book (other than the book's acknowledgements which seem rarely to mention the agent in real life)?

Check out the book. Sometimes the authors thank their agents in the acknowledgment.

Next stop, check the author's website or do a google. I've found a few that way.

PM is a good source if you can afford it.

A polite e-mail query to the author shouldn't hurt. I've had a few of those, and I'm always happy to chat about my agent ... with the clear caveat that me providing his name does not equal a recommendation.

Hey, I never thought about googling author name + "agent." That's very clever. I'll do that sheerly to amuse myself now.. :)

Author blogs also usually mention it at some point

If you ever get utterly hard up and really really need that info, then after exhausting other avenues, call the publisher. Often you don;t need to bother the editor--their rights department usually knows. Don't tell them you're a writer, just tell them you're trying to contact so-and-so's agent.

Don't abuse this approach. Emergency use only.
