What's the difference between a sub-editor and in in-house editor?

Hi everyone it cpt b bear!

My book is with a major publisher. I received news that I've had a successful review from the sub-editor and now it's with the in-house editor for review. As I don't have a clue as to the chain of command within publishing houses, what exactly does that mean? Is this good? At least I haven't gotten a rejection notice!

Look forward to your comments!

Hmm. Most publishing houses have their editors all in-house (meaning I guess a full-time employee of the publisher). Normally an agent is submitting to a senior editor (a large publisher may have a dozen editors in different areas of expertise of fiction and non-fiction). Once the senior editor approves it, then the book is usually passed up the ladder to a committee that has to also approve it, often from a marketing perspective and addressing issues like how much to offer as an advance etc.

I would say that whatever an "in house" editor is, that person would hold the biggest keys to the kingdom. But even after that he/she would still have to pass it up the ladder.

thanks for the information

Hi its capt b bear,

thanks to all for your input. This was a submission I put directly with the publisher and received a response in like, so I have to guess this is going through the chain of command???? Anyway, hopefully this is the first step, but who knows because I never expected to get this far! Eneryone has a dream hopefully mu dreams comes true! The comment I recieved from the sub-editor is that my book deserves to be published. I found that comment refreshing but who knows? I've found that picture books for children is not so easy but mine is definitely a little left of center, and beleive me its far out, but saying that I can only cross my fingers that it passes the test. So far so good but who knows what the future will hold?

As always grateful to this forum beacuse I've learned a lot!

Grazie

Thanks to all for the replys

Thanks to all for your replys. Since I contacted this publisher directly, I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the future holds. I don't bug them but they have keept in contact via email or phone with me. My book is a little left of center for a children's picture book and very, very long. It really doesn't follow any establised guidelines. Soooooo, like I said I haven't been rejected.......yet........!

Thanks again
