Epic rock - the Scandinavians are doing it best at the moment: Stratovarius, Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish and a mention for Anglo-Italian contenders Powerquest
Plus the old masters - Rainbow, Sabbath, Rush

I love Audioslave and Alice in Chains, but while I'm writing...silence is golden...

When I'm on a roll and want rock and roll and for that I go to a "station" on yahoo's launchcast that a friend of mine set up. When I'm starting a new section I like celtic music. I like the sound and I've found it less distracting because I don't know it nearly as well as rock and roll.

When I'm working on a screenplay I enjoy soundtracks and scores. Badalamenti is a favorite so most of the Lynch soundtracks are great. The 28 Days Later soundtrack is also great. Danny the Dog is pretty much just Del Naja so it's like a Massive Attack record. Mr. Bungle is very cinematic as well and works great for screenplays. Fantomas would be another cinematic type thing but it's a bit more metal so it can change the vibe. Electronic music is good for screenplays. Massive Attack, Prodigy, Mc 900 Foot Jesus, Oakenfold, Scorn, Crossover...all good for the SP.

Wow... another Mr. Bungle fan! We're few and far between these days. What do you think of Peeping Tom? That's my new favorite sex-scene-writing music. (And one of the tracks is feat. Massive Attack... and one is feat. Norah Jones repeatedly uttering an Extremely Naughty Word.)

I usually have to stick to instrumental music. The Gladiator soundtrack is one of my favorites, although I usually prefer classical to movie soundtracks.

As far as music with lyrics:

Siouxsie and the Banshees
ELO
Jethro Tull
Fleetwood Mac
Led Zeppelin (if I'm really feeling focused)

The Massive Attack is my favorite song on that record. Not really because of Del Naja but because Mike lets himself actually sing in it...and Mike singing is a beautiful thing.

Bungle is good to be sure. Speaking of Mike singing, one of my favorite songs of all time is the Bungle song Retrovertigo. As I type this I'm listening to a FNM song called Take this Bottle...more singing from Mike. For a guy with no formal training he really has excellent vocal control and strength.

Since my previous post was sucked up by a black hole I will repost.

I love listening to music when I write. Music plays such a big part in movies, it really helps draw people in emotionally.

I listen to a little of everything with the exception for rap and country music.

I find soundtracks, great motivational music when writing. The first Pirates of the Carribean soundtrack, Finding Nemo, Twilight Zone, Clash of the Titans.

If I am writing an action scene I will throw in some metal. For my sci fi I wrote to Machine Head, Unearth and Tool. I also used some electronic music Front Line Assembly and some other random trance tracks.

Occasionally the music does have to be shut off though. :D

Ah yes, music. While at times certain songs may spark ideas, I prefer to avoid lyrical music when doing my actual writing. I find at times I'm caught up in the lyrics themselves moreso in the writing in front of me. So I limit myself to the comfort of the familiar: video game soundtracks. Primarily Final Fantasy music, to be exact. In my mind nothing can compare with Nobuo Uematsu, especially some of the orchestrated versions of the tracks.

I'm with those who prefer silence when writing. However, I will frequently use a certain kind of music to help tune out noise and distractions - Arvo Part's "Tabula Rasa" is perfect for this. I also have some harpsichord music by Handel that very quickly recedes into the background.

If I listened to the music that I like the best (Radiohead, The White Stripes, the Flaming Lips, NIN) I would stop writing and pay attention to the music! I just can't focus with my favorite song playing.

Depends on the scene. One of my character's "theme songs" is "Pimpf" by Depeche Mode. TOTALLY puts me in the mood!
