My query letters are short (no more than one page) and I check them carefully for spelling, grammar, and most importantly, accurate spelling of editor's name and address. They include a statement of the novel's genre and word lenght, a one to two paragraph description of the novel (written in present tense and designed to grab attention - a lot like a blurb), any relevant publication record (e.g. short stories for kids) and a thank you to the editor for reading/considering my query (I usually also mention that the SASE - stamped, self-addressed envelope - is enclosed).

Other people have written about query letters on this forum, so if you do a quick search (button in top right corner) you'll find other information and even examples, and there is always Google. Lots of good writers have hints and examples on their websites or in free ezines.

Once you've written your query letter, if you want someone to look at it for you, pop over to our "Share Your Work" forum and post it. People here are friendly and happy to help.

Best of luck,

Jenny
