I managed to get an agent to read my manuscript. In the meantime, I would like to submit elsewhere. What's the protocol with this?

I'm assuming that the agent in question does not have an exclusive. If that's the case, simply send out your queries or partials as usual and go from there. Agents assume you're querying multiple agents unless you give them an exclusive.

Gillhoughly, I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean. If the first agent doesn't have an exclusive, odds are that agent assumes you're sending the same item to other agents. Nothing discourteous about that. Do I misunderstand you?

Query as many as you want (unless the agent says "no simultaneous queries") but if the agent requests something, you will have to hold off (unless the other agent doesn't have exclusivity).

Definitely keep querying the same project to other agents unless you have an exclusive with the first. As others mentioned, most agents assume you are submitting to other agents at the same time if they haven't asked for exclusive consideration. Now, with publishers it's a whole 'nother story. =)
