OK, this is tangentially about romance writing (although it gives a good lesson on libel law :D), but...

In case you haven't heard, romance author Rebecca Brandewyne has one a libel suit against her ex, who published a book alleging lots of wacky things about her through AuthorHouse (a POD vanity publisher).

I used to love her books, and while I'm not into her style anymore, I still say... You go, girl!

I read about this too, but honestly I'm not sure what I think about this verdict. I guess it's because I consider a POD like a glorified copy machine - they aren't editors, they aren't a professional publisher in the traditional sense, and as long as you can pony up the fee they are going to print whatever you've got. If I wrote a nasty story about my ex and made copies on the office copier, I wouldn't expect Xerox to be held liable. I definitely think the authors should be punished, I'm just not sure about AuthorHouse. But I'm not terribly well-versed in libel law either. (I try to limit nasty comments about others to the privacy of my own home, LOL).

According to what I read on Jaw's blog, the publisher knew this manuscript might be (cough cough) problematic, but chose to publish it anyway.
That can only be described as...
