A long time ago (late 60's?) I read a story the title of which I can not remember well enough to Google. It was a story of the first colony on Mars, and told in the context of a college ancient history class sometime centuries later. The class was taught by an irritable old prof, and had an exciteable young female student who had vaguely heard of "Captain Mighty Mason" and wanted to know more, a lot more.Mason was the commander of the first group sent to colonize Mars. Thirty people, Mason and 29 women. The group was chosen with much political fanfare from the then space academy cadets. The intended makeup of the first group was to be 25 men (strong for the needed effort) and 5 women (for company and breedable). The men and women were to be chosen by drawing from a hat. 2500 male cadets and 500 female cadets (as I remember the numbers) were put in the hat, the politico's figuring give or a take a bit they would end up with about 25/5. As it turns out, 29 female names were drawn (the lottery being publicly televised) and Mason's. Made worse was that Mason was dead last in his class of cadets.Because of the fanfare, Mason and crew were rocketed off anyway, everyone sure the colony would perish. A second group was hurredly assembled to be the replacement colony, but a couple of gliches caused delays. The second group arrived Mars exactly nine months to the day after launch of the first group. The first group was doing just fine, and in fact the population of the colony was double, one female having had twins.Anyone know the name of the story or who wrote it? TIA
