Hope this hasn't been covered too much already, but I was thinking this weekend about books with no real, defined villains (I'm thinking mostly Thrillers, here). I know that in most the <insert big scary thing> sort of acts like a villain, but I think there's a difference between something perceived as a villain and something deliberate, malicious or calculated.
So, what do you guys think? Like/hate? Do you think it works as well as a book with a clearly defined villain (even if the villain is shades of gray, as opposed to just comicbook dark) or does it matter?
Cheers,
