Editor Rates

sunnysmile

Hi everyone,

I'm new here and I'm so glad I found this forum at the time when I needed some information. An online publishing company wanted to contract me for editing services (for fiction novels), and I just wonder what is the going rate these days? How are such editors paid? I don't want to be shortchanged, so thanks!

My reading here is that sunnysmile is being offered a job *as* an editor. Generally the publisher offeres the job at a set rate. it would be odd for them to ask you to do more than accept or reject the job as offered. A reasonable fee depends on the level of the manuscript and level required from publsihing (i.e. time spent on each book), and the profits made from each manuscript. Some places pay a salary, others a set fee, or a royalty share.

Thanks, veinglory. THat's exactly what I meant. This is my first editor contract, so as you can see, I'm like floundering in the sea. (Hehe... Is that a good metaphor?) Veinglory, would you have any idea of how much this set fee is or what percentage of royalty? This is an e-pub, so I don't know if they charge differently from print companies.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

I don't know first had but I believe epublishers normally pay a small royalty percentage or set fee. I could probably find out if you give me a day or so.

I think that is the name of the company. Anyway, they were charging $5.00 per-page. 300 word page. They than contracted an Editor for you. How much the Editor was paid out of the $5.00 I don't know. Maybe that will give you some idea.

I did ask around and really just got a huge 'it depends' some are getting hourly pay, or a 5% royalty or something like a flat $30.

Thanks, Ed, and thanks, veinglory. I really appreciate it very much. Mine is pretty standard rate, I guess. 5% of royalties
