What happens when you sell your very first script for $300,000, get to be the director with no directing experience, then piss the chance away for being an egomaniacal twit who drinks too much for your own good and treats every person around him worse than the crap.

Apparently this is the true story of some Troy Duffy guy who struck it rich selling his first script, then pissed it all away.
I would love more than anything to find out how in the heck he landed in the right time/right place with Harvey Weinstein, and get this deal out of it.

Anyhow, the documentary "Overnight" was an entertaining little piece thats probably better than the original junk called 'The Boondock Saints'. Anything thats not an xxx movie..with Ron Jeremy....come on now.

But it was entertaining...the documentary. And all you first time sellers hoping to land it big with your great story might want to take a look at this.

If anything, this is a good lesson on what happens when you rub people the wrong way in the movie business. They will carry you along, toss a few bucks your way, and teach you what the word "blacklist" means.

Just thought this could be some useful intel for the new upcomer.

The funny thing is I wonder what would have happened with this project if the Duffy guy DIDNT PISS OFF everyone he came across.
Cause the concept sounds like crap in itself. Weinstein must have been 2 past his limit to give the guy a break in the first place, or must have been doing some kind of good deed helping this idiot out.

But it was funny to see the guy get his 15 minutes of fame, rubbing elbows with Marky Mark, Patrick Swayze, and a few others one day, then get banished just like that.
Its one tough game, this show business.
But this guy continued on, and eventually made the movie.
If the project was great, then maybe it could have had a chance inspite of everything behind the scenes. So persistence is golden. Ill give the duffy guy that..he didnt stop.

Be careful what you wish for...you might just get it....AND you might not be ready for it could be the lesson we learn from this.

If you like a good train wreck, go to blockbuster and check out "Overnight".

P.S. if anyone knows exactly what this guy did to smooze Harvey Weinstein, let me know, because it deserves the bullsh*it of the century award whatever it was.

Thought Id add an article I read that tells a few more details about what really happened.

Imagine your trying to cast for your project, a decent named actor. Then you piss off any hope of any relationship over fricken the death penalty. Stop looking at my girl like that, okay thats something. Watch your language around my mother/girl..thats something too. Over the death penalty.

Talk about your haunting memories to have to live with.

Well, heres 2 articles for any interested.

Imagine having cause to sue for $20 Million dollars and pass that up because you think youll make more than that. Hmm.
I dont think theres a foot big enough that could kick this guy in the a** hard enough to smack some sense into him.

My vote for bonehead of the decade award!

Whoa, thanks for that story. I think Ill brush up on my social skills before I sell anything!

Blackheart

I'd rather eat a case of alpo than sit through that atrocious movie again. Dafoe wasn't content to chew just the scenery. Half of New England went down his gullett with it.

I actually ended up seeing The Boondock Saints..or at least the first 15 minutes of it.
Boy, how in the world did this picture get the green light twice?

Terribly made, action was a joke..there should be a lesson taught at film school on this...how NOT to make a movie.

It was a decent script (I'm an athiest). Harvy went to the bar where Troy worked. A lot of famous people did.

That "pile of ****" cost 7 million dollars. Mallrats cost 6, for comparison.

Overnight was somewhat biased. TD is an *******, don't ge me wrong, but Harvy prmised him the world and then just stopped answering his calls. But we didn't see that.

Try not to ***** about things you don't fully understand (I'm not talking about the quality of the film).

Aaaand welcome to the forum, Dibship.

Extra insight on the Harvey/Troy relationship appreciated. Discussion is always welcome, just don't be rude please. The story has become something of an urban legend and these often get twisted or misquoted.

I don't think it's that rude to tell someone to watch a movie before they bad mouth it.

There is an Australian equivalent - a documentary called 'Making Venus' - about 2 guys trying to make a movie called 'The Venus Factory'.

In their case they weren't drunk - or even jerks. Just waaaay in over their heads.

I saw the movie they made and it was absolutely TERRIBLE. The doco was quite funny - in a very sad 'inevitable car-crash' kind of way.

I met the director of it a few times, and until I saw the movie couldn't understand why he refused to have his name on it.

The two guys who made 'The Venus Factory' were amazingly good sports about it - they appeared on discussions about what went wrong. Basically their rationale is that it's their job to try and get as much of the investor's money back as possible. If that means they need to push the doco about their failure, then they need to swallow their pride and do it.

I'm not sure I'd be so cooperative....

Mac.

The unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of
Dibship mentioning mallrats brought this story to mind, thought I'd share it with you, as it's in a similar vein.

Writer/Director Kevin Smith and his producer Scott Mosier (who did Mallrats) were at film school together. Their class assignment for one term was to make a documentary.
While the rest of the class went ahead and made their documentary, Smith and Mosier fumbled it Soo badly, they were left with no choice but to scrap what they had. With time running out, they decided to make a documentary about why their documentary failed.
I don't know why, but that tickles me.

Again, you people need to do your research. Smith and company didn't really "fumble" anything. The transvetite that the documentary was about skipped town, leaving them with only one nights footage of him/her. So instead, they filmed the crew badmouthing them for starting something that could so easily be scrapped.

Also, they didn't even want to make the documentary. They just wanted to "win the pitch". And they weren't "pressed for time" after it failed, they had only wasted one night. And Mayday: The Crumbling of a Documentary won in thier class (I guess it was a contest). Go get Clerks X, they have the documentary and the making of the documentary in the special features. Plus a crap load on Clerks.

Dibship -- wondering if you were close to the project, or you just an angry little idiot. Hey DPAT -- is this someone reincarnated from a different name?

Reason why Harvey stopped returning his calls, was at first impression he seemed like he might be able to follow through with all the big talk. Then other movie execs were not very impressed with the womanizing, and all the drinking, and the overall attitude he held which was partly captured on the video.

He burned too many bridges during the casting, showed his a**, and no one was impressed.
So they cut him off, blacklisted him, and Duffys so stupid to understand why.
"Harvey promised him the world, and stopped answering calls" what kinda crap you reading.
He cashed out before he got any deeper.
Thats what you do when you realize somwones not worht your time. Dont try to reverse anything about anything here.

Now I dont know what rock you came from, but if you can dare tell me with all honesty that the boondock saints was decent, even as a script, and not a mediocre piece of garbage, I would have but 2 responses for you....

Either youre an immature little kid with no true taste in movies, (athiest or not -- who cares) or just someone in need of attention negative or not, trying to enter a board room or change his name and bring up a dead issue.

Probably as deranged as the Duffy guy himself, who started a recent college tour and doesnt understand that all the attenion he still gets is similiar to that of a captured psychopath, whos only there to be studied by future screenwriters who will do good things as dont let this happen to you.

Either way, you sound like an idiot. So dont waste our time.

You, are the one that seemed half educated on this subject. You get alittle more intel than whats going around before YOU talk about something you seem to know nothing about.
But then again, I wouldnt expect that from a little idiot

Huh. I've heard about the Boondock Saints/Duffy thing but to be honest, I didn't think the movie was completely terrible. Willem Dafoe may have chewed up more scenery than he could swallow (how gay was he supposed to be, because I've never seen gayness like that in anything this side of Ru Paul!) but it wasn't a total waste of time. It must not have been, since it recently received a Special Edition DVD release which seems to be doing well.

As for the Duffy/Overnight story, I've heard it before and it seems to vary with each person who tells it. I don't much care -- I'd never repeat his mistakes because I'd be too damned appreciative of the opportunity and the dough -- but if it serves as a warning to others, more power to it. Do the details even matter when it comes to something like this, so long as the "don't be a dick and bite the hand that feeds you" message remains intact?

Eh. To each his own.

I'm half educated on the subject? You haven't given one fact outside of what you saw in Overnight.

No need for insults or snarkiness, it's only a film.

Friendly discussion of said film seems unlikely here, so thread closed. PM me if any problems.
