I was browsing my local Waterstones (UK Bookshop chain today) and came across trilogy in the horror section - I noticed the price was 10:99 (?!?!) and it was printed by "Lightning source"...

Is this a self published book..?

There's a good chance that it is. Lightning Source is a POD printer. They print PublishAmerica's books, among many others.

Most of the Publish on Demand publishers use Lightning Source as their printer. This includes both the scams (Publish America) and some of the legitimate small presses.

If the book didn't list a publisher, I imagine that ups the odds of it being self-published.

Not necessarily. It's a print-on-demand title, but lots of small presses are using Lightning Source as a way to get around putting a lot of money into getting a book into print.

I'm surprised it actually said it was printed by Lightning Source, though. None of the books I've done print runs through them have had that printed on them, only "Printed in the United States Of America."

Perhaps the UK LS arm is a bit different...?

For a paperback of 200 pages, it was 10.99 UK Pounds, which is VERY expensive. I could get a hardback of the new King novel for that. I read a couple of pages, and it didn't grab me - then again, the blurb on the back didn't get me.

This is the book:

To me, it looks like David Moody self-published his books, and Infected Books is the publishing company he established to do that. On the Amazon.com site, "Infected Books" shows up as the publisher. My guess is he's got a Lightning Source account to print them.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I downloaded a pdf of "Autumn" from the website - it's free. Interesting "bio" - apparently he writes original and thought provoking fiction. But he would say that.

You can download "Autumn" for free.
