Since Chaostitan got this week's chat log posted with such aplomb while I worried that it would be odd or weird or whatever, that it wasn't all in one piece.....
... here, and in the next two posts are the log from the initial chat, way back on March 9.

<sunandshadow> hi
<Peter> you can change it to something else, if you like, by typing /nick a space, and your new nickname
<Peter> hey sunandshadow
<sunandshadow> hey :)
<chaostitan> welcome to the insanity
<Peter> heh

<Peter> so you are all using the Javachat link from the forums?
<sunandshadow> sff chat starting now/soon?
<Serenity7474> Hey, *we're* the sane ones... it's the rest of the world that's fracked up :p
<sunandshadow> yep
<chaostitan> I brought cheesecake? Who's got the macaroons?
<Peter> it'll officially start in about 2 min...whatever that means.
<chaostitan> okay, the first part wasn't a question, jeez
<Peter> we're here; it's started
<chaostitan> <bells and whistles>
<Serenity7474> well, if you're not sure....
<Peter> Diana Hignut said she'd bring the macaroons
<chaostitan> ah yes, awesome
<Peter> 'course she didn't commit to coming . . . . .
<chaostitan> :~(
<Serenity7474> I'll bring the beer....
<chaostitan> woohoo
<Peter> but she did tell me that she would be honored to, sometime later, be guest speaker on some topic she's familiar with.
<Peter> I assume that might be along the lines of her thread

<chaostitan> I wonder if Sage will show. then we can start a Firefly riot
<Peter> LOL
<Serenity7474> YES!
* Sage has joined #absolutewrite
<Peter> speak of the devil...
<chaostitan> Speak of the devil
<Peter> hey Sage
<Serenity7474> :|
<Serenity7474> :|
<Peter> heh heh heh
<Sage> what? I'm a devil?
<Serenity7474> speak of the devil...
<chaostitan> we were just talking about you Sage
<Sage> what? why?
<chaostitan> I said if you showed up we could have a Firefly riot
<Sage> <hides>
<chaostitan> serenity is a Browncoat as well
<Sage> oh, okay. That's fun, then
<Serenity7474> No! Don't hide! Show your browncoated-ness
<Sage> Go Browncoats
<chaostitan> and she almost became a "Browncat"
<Sage> Lol
<Serenity7474> you and your typos
<Serenity7474> :þ
<chaostitan> I am doing great with typos tonight

<Peter> Sage, you were supposed to bring the Hawaiian Punch...but I see you came in empty handed.
<Sage> I knew that you were. I think I gave you a rep point for it
<Sage> No, it's in the car
<chaostitan> Yes you did, thank yee muchly
<Sage> I'll go get it
<Peter> ah great
<Serenity7474> <quick passes a beer to Sage> "Psst... use this. there's no color int he chat anyhow, he'll never know.... mwahahahahahahahah
<chaostitan> hopefully I bounced that rep point right back atcha
<Sage> I think you did
<chaostitan> Devious, ain't she?
<Sage> thanks, Serenity
<Serenity7474> <bows>
<Serenity7474> I aim to inhebriate....
<chaostitan> Better catch up, I'm halfway through mine
<Serenity7474> errr....
<Sage> <drinks>
<chaostitan> Chugs
<Sage> <sips>
<chaostitan> Who's got the funnel?
<Serenity7474> I can't spell either.... CHAOS!!! I blame her....
<chaostitan> <innocent smile>
<sunandshadow> I've got peppermint iced tea here.
<Sage> you should blame the beer
<Serenity7474> ok, I've got something similar...
<chaostitan> I'm easier to blame I think
<Serenity7474> except no peppermint, no iced and no tea. Just hops
* Peter wants a hydro pack of Czech pilsner . . .
<sunandshadow> lol
<Sage> how do you do the action, Peter?
<Peter> precede what you wish to 'action' with /me
<Peter> as in /me laughs
* Peter laughs
<Serenity7474> :|
<chaostitan> ooops
<Sage> :D
* Serenity7474 Laughs Out Loud
<Peter> there may be a button for actions on the java interface
<Sage> I have about five actions here
* Peter runs around the room pulling down the blinds and hangs out the CHAT SESSION IN PROGRESS sign.
<Sage> yeah. How'd you do that?
<Sage> I couldn't do that w/ my options
<Peter> precede what you wish to 'action' with /me
<Peter> as in /me laughs
* Peter laughs
<chaostitan> He possesses powers that we do no
<chaostitan> not
<chaostitan> dang it
<chaostitan> forget color words, it's too annoying to click every time
<Sage> ah ha!

[snip: lots of stuff about how to work the interface]

<sunandshadow> so... are we going to chat about anything in particular?
<Peter> so where are the other 16 folks who said they'd come, with or without their elfs?
<Sage> sci-fi? fantasy?
<Peter> your choice.
<chaostitan> Probably looking for their elfs. I saw in the news today that there was a rebellion....
<Serenity7474> all at once!
<sunandshadow> maybe everybody could say their interests and we could pick a common interest to chat about
<Peter> I thought this month we could just kinda get used to the whole chat routine and get to know one another a bit more.
<Peter> good idea, sun

<chaostitan> I am Chaos. Hear me roar.
<Sage> Later we could have prompts
<Serenity7474> I like sci-fi on tv and in movies
<chaostitan> <meows pitifully>
<sunandshadow> I like sf romance and sf video games
<Peter> so where is everyone from?
<Peter> central Oregon here.
<sunandshadow> pennsylvania
<chaostitan> Delaware
<Sage> originally, or right now?
<Serenity7474> Ooo... PA originally... where are you sunandshadow?
<sunandshadow> pittsburgh, used to be erie, then state college...
<Serenity7474> DUDE I grew up in Indiana , PA
<Serenity7474> GO STEELERS!!!!!
<sunandshadow> lol

<Peter> okay, let's see what we all write mostly... Type an F for fantasy or an S for science fiction.
<Peter> S
<Sage> what if you write both? in one novel?
<sunandshadow> Oh yeah, I got dragged to softball games for years, but I still don't have a clue about the rules
<Peter> guess you get to type FS then, Sage ;)
<Serenity7474> uh... more S than F, I suppose. Though my main story right now is Thriller :p
<chaostitan> S
<Sage> FS
<sunandshadow> oops
* Sage giggles
<sunandshadow> what about historical fiction with aliens? Is that SF?
<Serenity7474> you've created a monster Peter :p
<chaostitan> Aliens? Yep
<Peter> what the heck is IN that punch of yours, Sage?
* Sage giggles more
<chaostitan> Was it the beer?
<sunandshadow> I write non fiction too. But what if they're aliens with magic?
<Sage> that'd be FS too
<chaostitan> nonfiction about aliens with magic?
<chaostitan> sorry, couldn't resist
<Serenity7474> what if they're aliens with magic and beer? <ok, I need to stop now :p 'cause you're probably being serious>

<chaostitan> STOP THAT
<sunandshadow> lol well if you count my computer game's design document...
<Serenity7474> for all those present, Chaos and I share a brain... just so ya know
<Peter> it shows
<Sage> yep
<chaostitan> she's got it tonight
<Serenity7474> I do...?
<chaostitan> Don't you?
<Sage> actually I stole it
* Serenity7474 blinks
<chaostitan> Ack!

<sunandshadow> Who likes literary theory?
<Sage> & then gave it beer
<Peter> huh?
<chaostitan> She gave the brain beer??? Oh dear Lord
<Serenity7474> I think I like Sage :D
<chaostitan> Me too
<Peter> you mean like the stuff they tried to drum into us in School, sun?
<sunandshadow> yeah sort of.
<Sage> yay, you like me. You really like me
<Peter> I think for the most part, it's bunk
<sunandshadow> how to write books, narratology, structuralism, all that good stuff
<chaostitan> sunandshadow, I apologize. I'm drinking because I'm upset about something, so I may act a little silly tonight
<chaostitan> as if you couldn't tell
<sunandshadow> I don't mind if people are silly
<sunandshadow> sorry that you're upset about something though
<chaostitan> Thanks, :)
* Sage hugs chaos
<chaostitan> Stupid things, really, but the beer and cheesecake helps
<Serenity7474> theory is just that... *theory*. I hated it in music, don't much care for it in lit. I write what feels 'right'. Structure has purpose, but not at the cost of the story. <and I hope that makes sense>
<chaostitan> well, it's imaginary cheesecake
<Serenity7474> I was going to say... you have cheesecake???

<Peter> I dunno, sun. I bought all the books, you know? How to do this, that and the rest. And it still comes down to this: "Is the story any good? Would you read this if someone else wrote it?"
<chaostitan> I took a class in Rhetorical Criticism in College
<sunandshadow> yeah makes sense. Personally I love theory though
<Sage> I didn't realize there was a structure we're supposed to adhere to
<sunandshadow> there isn't
<sunandshadow> nobody can agree what it is
<chaostitan> LOL
<Sage> I was just telling my friend who is taking an english class about how the format we learned in high school didn't have as much use in college papers
<Peter> that's because there are as many theories about what makes a story good as there are writers...and possibly as many as there are readers.
<sunandshadow> other than the aristotelian unities maybe, and that's so basic it barely counts
<Sage> (format for essays in that case)
* Serenity7474 tries to remember the last structured paper she had to right
<Serenity7474> oh god
<Peter> heh
<chaostitan> heh
<Serenity7474> *WRITE*
<Peter> Where's reph when we need her?
<sunandshadow> unities
* Serenity7474 bangs head off desk
<sunandshadow> principle that storys shouldn't have anything extra which soesn't fit
<Sage> yeah, I don't know what the aristotelian unities are either
<Sage> oh, okay, I did know that
<Sage> just not what it was called
<sunandshadow> yeah, it's a basic idea, just the term is abstruse lol
<chaostitan> But how do you know what's extra and doesn't fit? Or is that a rhetorical question?
<Sage> does it drive the story?
<chaostitan> Abtruse?
<Sage> does it help the reader get a good idea of the world & characters?

<sunandshadow> Well, supposedly stories are constructed according to two principles
<sunandshadow> causality and teleology
* chaostitan snickers
<Peter> ok, but don't you agree that in genre fiction, whatever it is, there are things required that may not be required in other fiction? Such as (hopefully well-disguised) info dumps?
<Sage> explain...
<chaostitan> but you can cleverly disguise an info dump if you try
<Peter> exactly
<sunandshadow> causality is simply, if a character drinks poison we expect them to keel over
* Serenity7474 goes to a corner and watches the discussion go by :p
<Sage> but those info dumps will help the reader understand the story
<Peter> but you might not need one in a contemporary mystery
<Peter> whereas you probably would in a space opera that uses some sort of new technology
<sunandshadow> teleology is the idea that a story exists to get to a climax which is the conclusion of a thematic argument, so therefore the story must contain
<Sage> right. in the mystery, the reader knows the world. It doesn't usually have to be explained to them
* chaostitan tends to skim info dumps anyhow
<sunandshadow> all the necessary events to get to the climax and elements to present and argue the theme
<chaostitan> hmmm, so my novel follows a teleology by those definitions...interesting
* chaostitan is bemused
<Peter> the late great Octavia Butler had a great way with exposition...
<Sage> okay, those all make sense to me
<sunandshadow> yay sense is good :)

<sunandshadow> how about everyone's WIP(s)?
<Sage> what about them?
<sunandshadow> I mean what kind of thing are they
<sunandshadow> what genre and stuff

<Peter> let's go one at a time on this, okay?
<Peter> Chaos?
<chaostitan> oooh, me first. I have two WIP's at the moment, both of them sci fi
<Peter> Chaos, any hints as to topic?
<sunandshadow> lit mags are fun I edited one for a while
<chaostitan> people born with psychic powers because of medical experiments, trying to fit in and stuff
<chaostitan> general hints
<Peter> both of them are on same topic?
<sunandshadow> I always like 'trying to fit in' stories. :)
<chaostitan> yes, same "world", different time periods
<Peter> great!

<Peter> Sage, how about you?
* chaostitan pokes Sage
* Peter thinks she fell into the punch
<Sage> My WIP is fantasy, set in the future. I'm not sure I can give a short description of it
<Peter> it relies on magic, yes?
<chaostitan> How about a medium description?
<Sage> THe other one I'm editing is fantasy
<sunandshadow> well how about a list - does it have dragons? elves? an orb of something or other? ;)
<Peter> a Spokesman for a machine named Fred?
<Sage> The WIP. Twins have psychic powers, & one of them almost never speaks because of his. They are taken from their world to another one which is much more classically fantasy
<Peter> ooh...like it
<Sage> because the one who doesn't speak can do something nobody there can do
<Sage> yay :-D
<Peter> reminiscent of DeLint
<sunandshadow> I love hearing what everyone is doing ^_^
<Peter> Thanks Sage

<Peter> Serenity, how about you?
* tjwriter has joined #absolutewrite
<sunandshadow> hi :)
<Peter> howdy, tj
* Sage waves
<tjwriter> hello pardon my slow typing
<Peter> not a problem
<sunandshadow> tj we're going around taking turns letting everyone describe their WIP(s)
<tjwriter> baby in one arm, pecking with the other
<tjwriter> ok
<Peter> and we're waiting on Serenity...who I think gave her brain back
* sunandshadow looks around for Serenity
<Sage> yeah, I gave it back to here
<Serenity7474> oops... sorry, was talking :p
<Serenity7474> not here obviously
<Sage> her
* sunandshadow Laughs Out Loud :D
<Peter> lol
<Serenity7474> ok, two WIP, one sci-fi and one Mystery/Thriller
<Peter> we were kinda hoping to hear something about your WIP
<Peter> hints, hints.
<Serenity7474> the sci-fi one is suspiciously a lot like Chaos'... 'cause I'm helping her with it :p
<Serenity7474> just a bit ;)
* chaostitan smiles at my co-author
<Peter> lol ok
<Peter> and the thriller?
<sunandshadow> I like co-writing, I think it's more fun than writing by yourself
<Serenity7474> my Mystery/Thriller is about a serial killer who's MO is leaving bits of hymns with his victims
<Peter> wow. Impressive
<chaostitan> I agree sunandshadow, the dialogue is great fun to write
<sunandshadow> hymns? wacky
<Peter> thanks Serenity

<Peter> sun?
<Sage> that's cool. I tried to convince my friend to co-write a novel w/ me. She has since given up on writing though
<Serenity7474> oh, he/she's one messed up dude
<chaostitan> bummer
<Sage> wow, neat
<Serenity7474> dudette :p
<sunandshadow> Ok 2 WIPs for me too
<sunandshadow> first is a video game
<sunandshadow> science fantasy romance
<Peter> hmm
<sunandshadow> one of those set-ups where there's the magical race over here and the technological race over there, and the human player dropped into the middle
<Peter> uh oh...lol
<Sage> :)
<sunandshadow> the player gets to go around and court some characters from various races
<Peter> now THAT does sound kinky
<Sage> it doesn't have to be
<Sage> depends on the race
<Peter> yeah, but think where the video game might be played...or by whom ;-)
<sunandshadow> there's a whole genre of game called 'dating sims' where the goal of the gameplay is to court the characters
<sunandshadow> one race is hermaphrodites, the other is animal-people, so yeah a little kinky lol
<Sage> i don't think I want to
<Peter> really. wow, I didn't know that
<sunandshadow> some normal humans too of course
<Sage> yay, hemaphrodites!
<Peter> shades of Ms. Butler ;)
<sunandshadow> hmm, I suppose so. :) I loved her Xenogenesis trilogy
<sunandshadow> and that story blood child
<Peter> me too...even though it ended with a sense of hoplessness...as compared with say, Heinlein
<sunandshadow> my other WIP I think Peter at least has heard about before
<sunandshadow> it's a gay male romance with dragon-lime aliens
* chaostitan blinks
<sunandshadow> *snorts with laughter*
<Sage> dragon-lime?
<Peter> dragon-lime?
<tjwriter> lol
<sunandshadow> dragon-like aliens
<Peter> served with tequila?
<Sage> oh
<Peter> oh
<Peter> dang
* chaostitan LOL
<Sage> I tried to make it work, but I couldn't
<sunandshadow> rotfl
<tjwriter> rocks or frozen?
<chaostitan> I was gonna ask if they were dragons or limes
<Peter> they change
<sunandshadow> yeah, actually they're humanoid bird-dinosaurs
<Peter> so, anyway...

<Peter> tjwriter, how about yourself? a WIP?
<tjwriter> i've haven't been writing much so...
<chaostitan> So it it Peter's turn?
<Sage> come on, Peter
<tjwriter> well i have some ideas maybe
<Sage> you know you wanna
<Peter> let's hear 'em
<Sage> ooh, or tj
<chaostitan> ideas are just the first step
<Peter> if they're any good, we'll steal 'em
<Sage> we'll help you brainstorm
<chaostitan> take the plunge with us!
* chaostitan plunges into her beer bottle
<Sage> plunge the knife... oh , wait
<chaostitan> that's a different thread
<Sage> or two
<chaostitan> You are off topic!
<tjwriter> I've been working on some stuff today. I sort of left one WIP hanging because I think it needs to be reworked
<Peter> yeah, horror chat is another night
<sunandshadow> yay brainstorming
<Serenity7474> but works for me tonight... can I borrow the knife?
<tjwriter> lol
* chaostitan hides
<Serenity7474> not for you, chaos, you know for who
<chaostitan> ah yes
* chaostitan polishes the knife
<Serenity7474> sorry tj, I'm being rude.
<Sage> tell us, tj about your hanging WIP
<Sage> & your ideas
<chaostitan> Wow Sage, don't get personal!
<Sage> which cannot be stolen
<tjwriter> but i have been toying around with a mercenary and an old abandoned castle
<Peter> well, don't feel bad about leaving a WIP hanging...I have 4 novels like that and a gazillion shorts.
<Sage> :p
<tjwriter> some magic and it needs something else

* chaostitan wonders if anyone else has a hanging WIP
<sunandshadow> yay mercenaries! I <3 mercenaries
<tjwriter> lol
* Peter thinks 'course his shorts hang on the clothes line. . .
* chaostitan can't breathe
<Serenity7474> ditto
<tjwriter> it's so nice to socialize
<Serenity7474> you have no idea how much I needed that
<Peter> it is.
* sunandshadow gives chaos some oxygen
<Sage> does it need dragon-lime aliens?
<Peter> EVERYTHING Does
<Serenity7474> I was seriously considering ordering a hit on two people
* chaostitan gulps oxygen
<sunandshadow> rotfl
<Sage> well, we killed chaos, does that make you feel better?
* Peter smiles
<Serenity7474> NO! That means i have to finish the book myself!
<sunandshadow> dos that mean everything will be orderly now?
<Sage> LOL
<Peter> Serenity, would you care to finish mine instead?
<Serenity7474> Depends... can I blow s#$% up?
<Sage> Nobody's allowed to finish mine. I'm so close to the end... sorta
<Peter> sure
<Serenity7474> YEAH!
* sunandshadow plays shell game with manuscripts and passes them out randomly
<Serenity7474> Count me in
<chaostitan> A hanging WIP with dragon-limes. Anyone wanna write that up for Miss snark's next Crap-o-Meter?

<Peter> oh, I'm done with mine...it just is too blankety-blank big
<Sage> well, that too
<Sage> editing will be FUN
<tjwriter> lol
<chaostitan> I had that problem Peter. So I made it into two novels :p
* sunandshadow pulls out a machete for whittling too-big MSes down to size
<Peter> I thought I could do that too.
<chaostitan> No luck?
<Sage> I wish I could
<Peter> but the story arc spanned the entire 260,000 words
<tjwriter> oohh machetes are becoming the weapon of choice for urban crimes
<chaostitan> Holy Cow!
<Sage> wow. Okay, you doubled mine
* Serenity7474 blinks
<Peter> when I put a climax in the middle it was kinda like the end of a TV drama season
* Serenity7474 blinks some more
<Peter> like "huh?"
<chaostitan> that's longer than BOTH of my books
<Peter> what happened?

<tjwriter> lil big ther, eh?
<Peter> lil big, yep
<Peter> all written in 5 months, no less.
<tjwriter> :þ
* chaostitan faints
<Sage> wow, again
<sunandshadow> man, if I wrote that much...
<Peter> which is why now, I have a day job...
* chaostitan vows to learn better discipline
<sunandshadow> *wonders idly how much I write a month if you count all emails and forum posts*
<Peter> that writing marathon damn near bankrupted me
<tjwriter> i wish i could afford to write like that
<sunandshadow> why did they charge you by the word?
* chaostitan snickers
<Peter> no, but I didn't do anything else.
<Sage> I wrote 57,000 in one month (that I'm editing now), so that's not too bad. But I probably wouldn't be able to go at that pace for 5 months
<sunandshadow> nanowrimo?
<Sage> yep
<Peter> meanwhile the electric meter kept spinning, I kept eating food, and the mortgage came due...several times.
<Sage> that's the one I'm editing
<sunandshadow> aha, I thought I remembered you from that
<sunandshadow> Nano manuscripts are a pain to edit because they're crappier than usual first drafts
<Sage> yeah. I'm the one w/ all the dares
<chaostitan> I started Nano, but I got distracted by the second week and had to quit

<sunandshadow> Mine are anyway. At least 20% worse
<sunandshadow> Yeah, I quit at 22k
<chaostitan> Actually, I wrote one manuscript the first week, changed the idea for the second week, and then by the third week decided that my brain would rather edit a different story than write something new
<chaostitan> silly brain
<Sage> we'll have to see after i get around to editing both. I think that NaNo helped me get right into the action, which my WIP is not as good about because that world has so much setting up
<Sage> i hate it when the brain decides to do things than you wanted
<chaostitan> My brain never listens to me.
<sunandshadow> I realized that without understanding how I wanted the plot to go I felt like I was wading through quicksand trying to write
* Sage will be right back
<Peter> my brain stopped aging about 20 years ago...but my body didn't
<chaostitan> heh

<chaostitan> Do who here outlines?
<sunandshadow> me
<chaostitan> *So
<chaostitan> crap
<Peter> I do
<sunandshadow> not by choice but by sheer necessity
<Peter> some
<tjwriter> vague outlines
<Peter> yeah...mine come to being when Iabout
<Peter> crap
<Peter> when I'm about a third of the way done
<sunandshadow> ah I was wondering what a labout is
<Peter> heh, sorry
<sunandshadow> put it in the hanging wip with the dragon-limes
<tjwriter> lol me too
<chaostitan> outdoor laboratory
<Peter> ok, we need a labout dragon-lime thread.
<chaostitan> Office Party!

[Discussion of the moderator's novel theme {Hey, what do you expect? Being moderator has to have SOME perks}]

<Peter> ok, I have a question...
<sunandshadow> so, if you outline, HOW do you outline?
<sunandshadow> I always need more technique tips for outlining
<chaostitan> Do we answer now or wait for Peter's question? :p
<sunandshadow> oh oops, what's your question?
<Peter> go ahead...I'm typing
<chaostitan> hehe
<chaostitan> well, one of my WIP's (not the co-authored one) is outlined scene for scene. Action, snips of dialogue. I know exactly how that novel will go.
<chaostitan> I do bullet points
<chaostitan> it works for me
<sunandshadow> do the bullet points have any kind of pattern to them?
<sunandshadow> or just a list?
<chaostitan> Not every single scene in the outline makes it into the final draft, of course, but the map is in place. The points are just listed in order of occurence.
<sunandshadow> I remember that :)
<sunandshadow> chaos - ok

<Peter> my huge giant immense overblown WIP depends on two things: 1) something causes all mammals on Earth to die, but nothing else... and 2) those people who do escape live in a space station for 1000 years.
<Peter> what I want to know is ... what is Earth gonna be like with absolutely NO human intervention after a thousand years?
<chaostitan> peaceful?
<Peter> lol
<Peter> I mean, how much of our "stuff" will still be around?
<chaostitan> Wild, overgrown with flora
<sunandshadow> and no mammals either right?
<Peter> no mammals
<Peter> but insects, birds, reptiles, etc
<Peter> and fish

<chaostitan> well, plastic isn't biodegradeable, so I assume trash will be there, but maybe covered by centuries of sediement?
<sunandshadow> Some of the stuff in mountains or other places where plants gon't grow much would still be there
<sunandshadow> but mostly everything would be covered with plants
<Peter> ok, think of the oldest thing on Earth you know of...
<Peter> what is it?
<Peter> man made, that is
<chaostitan> Pyramids?
<sunandshadow> man-made thing I assume
<sunandshadow> ok

<Sage> I'm back
<Sage> what'd I miss?
<Peter> right.
<Peter> Great wall of China...etc
<chaostitan> so stone buildings
<Peter> but...
<chaostitan> brick, specifically
<chaostitan> uh.....but....
<chaostitan> crumbling?
* Sage is on the edge of her seat

<Peter> the Incas built pyramids...and the jungle grew up over them so that many are JUST now being found by deep radar in satellites.
<tjwriter> you will have erosion, etc from weather
* chaostitan kicks Sage's chair and smiles innocently
<Sage> what? who did that?
<sunandshadow> lol
<Sage> couldn't be chaostitan
* chaostitan grins
<Sage> sitting there so innocently...

<Peter> I'm thinking that most stuff made of steel, concrete, aluminum, even plastic will, after 1000 years of NO intervention by humans, be gone
<tjwriter> some things won't be intact
* chaostitan offers Sage a slice of cheesecake
<Sage> mmm
<Serenity7474> some things would remain, out of sheer stubborness to the elements.
<Sage> thank you
<tjwriter> hmmm cheesecake
* chaostitan gives a slice to tjwriter
<sunandshadow> Anthing that's a solid mass of stone where plants don't grow much has a decent chance of surviving 1,000 years in a recognizable form
<Peter> something like a football stadium in Kansas might be filled with loess, and be only a minor depression
<Sage> why would brick last longer than plastic, steel, & concrete?
<tjwriter> i've been craving sweet stuff all week lol
<Serenity7474> it depends upon location. Even with weathering, erosion, there are somethings that survive a 9.0 earthquake... dunno

<Peter> ok, look at this:
<Peter> around here, in central Oregon, the high desert...
<Peter> we have little rainfall
<chaostitan> and you'd think that major cities like New york and DC would have a lot of building bits still there, because of the lack of natural vegetation to begin with
<Peter> things tend NOT to rot
<Peter> but...
<Peter> asphalt paved roads that have been abandonded for just 20 years are ...
<Peter> ALMOST TOTALLY GONE
<sunandshadow> lack of natural vegetation would get evened out in less than 50 years, insignificant factor
<tjwriter> the suspense from your statements was killing me
<tjwriter> that would be from
<Peter> there'd be no wood houses left.
<sunandshadow> asphalt, being made from a particulate, erodes easily
<Serenity7474> but metal infrastructure? I'm not saying it would be intact, but *something* of it would be there, I would think
<tjwriter> wind erosion... particles in wind will erode as well
<sunandshadow> solid materials which don't rust last longest
<tjwriter> will erode things

<Peter> concrete roads take 100 years to deterioriate.
<Peter> now extrapolate that by ten times... what's left?
<Serenity7474> I guess I'm living in a Mad Max kinda world :p
<Peter> yeah, except HE had gasoline
<Serenity7474> hehe
<sunandshadow> I think some of the hindu temples carved in mountainsides would be left
<Sage> how long do brick roads take to deteriorate?
* sunandshadow has been studying architecture for the past month
<Peter> but would they be visable. or would they be buried under a millenium's worth of dust?
<sunandshadow> they get buried instead of deteriorating
<Peter> right
<Peter> so returnees might see some stuff...but they'd have to hunt for it
<sunandshadow> the mountainside ones would be visible, just eroded a bit by the wind
<Sage> wouldn't a concrete road?
<Peter> depends on the concrete.

* chaostitan sees the Statue of Liberty poking out of a sandy beach
* Serenity7474 sees Charlton Heston pounding the sand crying 'Damn you!'
<Peter> heh, that statue is made of copper...it'd be a puddle in 1000 years, "Planet of the Apes" notwithstanding.
<tjwriter> i think a lot of this can depend on what type of exposure to the elements and location of item in question
<Sage> the type of concrete will determine whether it gets buried by dust?
<Peter> no, whether it breaks down or not
<sunandshadow> granite would be one of the most enduring materials
<Peter> ancient concrete, made by the Romans, say, is still around after 2000 years...but people have, for most of that time, been taking care of it
<tjwriter> i.e. a concrete road in the plains will erode easier because there is no chance for a layer of material to accumulate on top of it
<Serenity7474> brb
<Peter> heh, sun...most of the sand on beaches is granite ;)
* chaostitan eyes are glazing over
<sunandshadow> quartz isn't it?
<Peter> yep

<Sage> how'd we get on this subject, anyway?
<chaostitan> Peter asked a question, then answered himself :p
<Peter> point being that wind, rain, snow, ice, freeze-thaw cycles break down granite just as fast as anything else.
<sunandshadow> no, some things just break down slower, and the location has a huge effect
<tjwriter> location then becomes the key factor
<Peter> heh, I'm being a devil's advocate...hoping that no one will show my supposition false
<sunandshadow> hehe "location location location"
<Peter> hehe
<tjwriter> lol i was think that
<Sage> what *was* your question?
<tjwriter> i like these kind of discussions. It works me brain a lil
<chaostitan> my brain is tired
<chaostitan> it's been up since 4am
<Sage> ick

<Peter> question: after a thousand years of no human intervention, ie: maintenance, how much of the stuff man has made will still be readily visible?
<Sage> visible? like from space?
<sunandshadow> answer: 1%
<Peter> no, by humans returning to earth...walking around on it
<Peter> or flying over it in survey planes
<sunandshadow> actually maybe more like .5% but certainly there will be a little
<Peter> here's an example I use in my story:
<Sage> when did man get wiped out? Now, or the future?
<Peter> explorers are surveying in the midwest of North America.
<Sage> 'k
<Peter> Sage, in my story, all but a few 100 thousand are wiped out in the future
<Peter> my story takes place 2000 years hence.
<Peter> ok so these explorers see a ridge...they're walking.
<sunandshadow> oh well that makes a big difference

* DamaNegra has joined #absolutewrite
<Peter> they climb up onto the ridge...and notice it goes absolutely straight to the horizon in both directions.
<sunandshadow> who knows what they were building then?
<Peter> DAMA!
<Sage> so in a thousand years, you don't think that something more long-lasting might be made than what we use today?'
<Peter> hola!
<Sage> Hola, dama
<DamaNegra> hola!! :D
<chaostitan> Heya!
<tjwriter> hiya
<sunandshadow> hi :)
<Peter> glad you could make it Dama
<Sage> we're discussing Peter's WIP & his theories

<DamaNegra> ok, I'm sorry I'm late, what's his WIP about??
<Sage> good question
<tjwriter> lol
<Peter> only because the rest of 'em were talking about beer and silliness.
<Sage> I missed that part until just now
<tjwriter> hang WIPs with dragon-limes
<Peter> yeah
<Peter> and labouts
<Sage> labouts?
<DamaNegra> labouts?
<Peter> tell you what, folks... lol
<Sage> did I miss that one too?
<chaostitan> Beer is god!
<Peter> I need to take off...fix supper and so forth.
<chaostitan> sorry, Sage, you missed labouts
<Sage> so, Peter... never mind
<Peter> but I kept a log of this chat, so I'll post it on the forum
<tjwriter> beer is god????
<DamaNegra> ok
<Sage> oh... ok /me pouts
<chaostitan> crap, I meant GOOD :p
<Sage> that didn't work

[Winding down -- ]

<Peter> now, before I go...
<Peter> you all want to continue doing this?
<chaostitan> well, I guess Beer can be God to some
<tjwriter> we should do this more often
<Sage> it's fun!
<DamaNegra> I'd rather have wine than beer
<Peter> tj, we'd planned on doing this on the 2nd Thursday monthly
<Sage> I'd rather have a mudslide, personally
<sunandshadow> sure, thursdays are so boring anyway
<chaostitan> I'm an equal opportunity drinker
<tjwriter> i need a social hour with other people and such
<Peter> but you know, it's possible to come in here anytime you like.
<DamaNegra> yeah but this room's empty most of the time
<sunandshadow> lol yeah I need whatever scraps of socialization I can get
<chaostitan> Just give a shout on the message board, or whatnot
<Sage> yes, but it's more fun when planned

* Wordman has joined #AbsoluteWrite
<Peter> hell, we could probably have a chat every week, if you like.
<DamaNegra> yup, I agree
<Peter> hiya Wordman
<chaostitan> I could be here most thursday nights about this time
<DamaNegra> hi!
<Sage> hey, wordman
<Wordman> Hello everyone.
<chaostitan> Yo!
<sunandshadow> hi
<DamaNegra> i could be here most days at this hour :p I don't have a life
<Sage> (who's wordman?) <blushes>
<tjwriter> i've spent all day at AW
<Peter> lol, Dama
<tjwriter> (i don't know either) hiya wordman
<Peter> shh, tj...they'll begin to suspect
<DamaNegra> heheh, me neither

<DamaNegra> wordman, I don't recall seeing you around the board
* chaostitan pretends to know
<DamaNegra> lol!
<Wordman> I've been in here a few times, but most of them, no one else is here or either they never bothered to recognize that I was even in the room.
<chaostitan> I have the brain now!
<DamaNegra> the brain?
<chaostitan> Serenity and I share a brain, Dama
<Peter> Wordman, when that happens, it's likely because they too have seen an empty room and have gone off to play trivia or something.
<Sage> Serenity gave it to you?
<Sage> is it still drunk?
<chaostitan> Yeah, she's "brb" so she's not using it
<Peter> just yell a lot when that happens again, ok?
<chaostitan> definitely still drunk
<sunandshadow> lol

<Wordman> I tried that Peter, and there was no response. :-D
<Peter> lol
* chaostitan with the drunk brain in her custody
<DamaNegra> well, we're here now :p
<Peter> well, you hit into the end of the very first ever official Absolute Write Science Fiction and Fantasy Forum live chat.
<Wordman> And I can yell pretty loud, just ask -- errr - don't ask the wife.
<Sage> yeah, & the guy who started us on both of our on-topic topics is leaving
<chaostitan> WHOOHOOO
<Peter> and we plan to do this what....couple times a month?
<chaostitan> I'm game for that
<DamaNegra> once every week :D
<Peter> okay.
<chaostitan> hehe
<DamaNegra> I couldn't make it on time this time
<Sage> yay!

<sunandshadow> How about unofficial ones every week and unofficial every 2 weeks or month?
<chaostitan> Gotta start that "Hanging WIP with a labout dragon-lime" thread
<DamaNegra> what's a labout???
<Peter> officially, we will convene 2nd and 4th Thursdays...the rest of the time, just come in and have fun
<DamaNegra> ok :D
<chaostitan> cool
<sunandshadow> nobody knows
<Sage> ok
<Peter> and I'm open for "official" topics for next time, please.
<tjwriter> now i have to go come up with some story so I have something to talk about
<chaostitan> we don't know what a dragon-lime is either
<DamaNegra> but but you still haven't told us what's a labout and dragon-lime!!

<Peter> so look for the chat thread in our forum.
<Sage> why don't you start a suggested prompte thread
<DamaNegra> you can't leave us hanging!!
<chaostitan> you're Pthom on the group, right Peter?
<Peter> and respond there.
<Peter> I am, chaos, yes.
<chaostitan> cool
<Serenity7474> well, I got back just in time to say bye, apparently
<tjwriter> yay an assignment.
<chaostitan> just checking
<sunandshadow> hehe hanging like a WIP?
<chaostitan> Just Peter is going, Serenity
<Sage> Pthom will post the transcript, so we can look it up, Dama
<DamaNegra> like my poor WIP who's been abandoned since last week
<Serenity7474> oh
<DamaNegra> ok
<Peter> yeah, you are all welcome...and encouraged...to stay and chat as long as you like.
<Serenity7474> well, bye then :D
<DamaNegra> it'd be easier for him to tell us but oh well
<DamaNegra> I'll stay another while
<tjwriter> bye
<sunandshadow> bye, see you next time!
<tjwriter> i can stay too
<Serenity7474> actually I'm going to go, tummy is a little rumbly right now (and no, not from the beer)
<Sage> bye
<Peter> take care, everyone!
<sunandshadow> bye
<DamaNegra> hmmm I'm hungry
<chaostitan> bye Peter
<Sage> & bye to Serenity too
<DamaNegra> I want rice cakes!! :D
