Long Beard--Growth Time?

One of the people in my writing group has no internet access (or she'd be here herself, I'm sure). She asked me if I could nose around to find out how long it takes to grow a long beard.

Of course there will be variations, just like with hair growth, but she'd like to know how long it might take for a typical beard to reach a man's:

upper chest, collarbone area
lower chest (nipple level or so)
waistline

I have no idea, but I want to make sure I'm subscribed to this thread to get the answer.

Mine never even got to Adam's Apple level. (I was twenty-one; a beard with an Ian McCulloch-type hairstyle was never a good idea. Imagine an eighties Satan.)

Yet another unhelpful post... hope the answer does appear in this thread!

Hair (head hair, that is) grows about 1/2 inch per month. Whether that rate would apply to facial hair--I dunno.

Actually head hair grows almost twice as fast on some people (mostly women) as on other people (men, old people). My hair (I'm a woman) grows about 10 inches a year, for example.

i don't know the answer either but i do know that nutrition would play into the growth rate. if the guy is say stranded someplace and eating poorly, it would grow slowly. whereas if he took some vow to not cut his hair and munched on garden goods and healthfood it should grow much faster. mine does.
my hair that is, not my beard. i keep that trimmed.

I think it varies with the individual. If I let my beard grow, it might reach my chest in a year. But I went to school with a guy who had to grow a beard for a play he was in, and he stopped shaving and had a full, handsome beard in about two weeks. So in his case, in a couple months his beard would have reached his upper chest.

In six months I can go from a clean shaven scalliwag to a Dwarven Rogue with a beard to his chest, right below the clavicles.)

For the record, to remain clean shaven I must shave twice in a day. Hope that helps.

Wow, there's some hairy dudes here! I, too, knew someone once who had to shave twice daily and could grow a beard or mustache in an amazingly short time.

I'm not holding my breath on the person actually writing this story. I wish she would. The image near the end, the part that tells the reader how long some people have been kept from civilization and razors, could be chilling.
