Okay, I'm not really sure where to put this, but a close family friend's birthday is coming up in July (she'll be turning 12) her and I have always been very close (despite our 9 yr. age difference) and she's recently gotten into doing a lot of writing. She's even let me read a few of her short stories and they've been very good. She told me she really likes my writing and I was thinking that it would be fun, as a birthday gift, to write a couple of short stories with her as the main character, and then get it bound through Lulu (as it would be a one-time project) and then give it to her for her birthday.

I just wondered if anybody has ever tried this and if so, what were your responses? I've given friends and family members poetry as gifts and they've always enjoyed them, as they are personalized especially for them, but I enjoy writing fiction much more than poetry. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. :)

It sounds like a good idea. I've been asked to do it myself, but feel uncomfortable about gifting my work. That's just a personal thing. I don't put value on my own work.

But I think it sounds like a great idea in your case. Especially since the two of you have a history of discussing writing together and she likes your writing. This is giving her a gift you know she will enjoy. Sounds perfect!

Thanks for your input, KTC.

I just wanted to get some feeback before I invested a lot of time in it. Your thoughts are appreciated. :)

I met a gentleman at a writer’s conference who wrote a novel for each one of his grandchildren. They each had a grandchild as its main character sort of in a “super hero” fashion. He said they loved them. What I liked best about this idea is that it’s forever. No matter what happens she’ll always have that special gift from you. Go for it!

Thanks, Writermom,

That had been my feeling too, that it would be a special gift just for her. Thanks for the feedback. :)

I think it's a wonderful idea and she'd get a huge kick out of it

Majiklmoon (great name by the way),

Thanks for your input...I'll definitely do it then. I've already got a story idea worked out and it'll be able to span over a couple of short stories. I don't usually do writing for Young Adults (I'm more of a suspense/thriller writer), but I think it'll be really fun to write so I think we'll both get something out of it. :)
