Should I bring up a personalized rejection?

About six years ago I received a rejection notice with one of those coveted hand-scribbled notes from the editor, which said: "Great idea, but the tone is off. Try again?" Or something like that.

I now wish to submit a new story to that magazine, which still has the same editor. Should I make reference to this earlier note ("At your suggestion I'm belatedly trying again," or somesuch quick phrase), or just forget about it?

After six years! Well...I recently did something similar, reminding a publisher of a class we took together six years before. The result--he requested the ms. Of course, he was probably just being nice...

Yeah, that is quite awhile. What can I say? I was slacking.

By the way, yours was pretty much the response I was expecting.

As to the publisher just being nice to you--hey, at least he's reading it. What's he gonna do? Extra-not publish it?

I'd say no. Why call to mind past rejections? If your writing is what he/she wants, it won't need the assist, and if it isn't, it will only reinforce a negative impression.

We have a winner. "No" it is. Thanks for the advice, everybody. I'll just have to wow them with the story instead (well, hopefully anyway).
