I don't remember where I heard this phrase but for some reason it just came to me today. I am somehow going to incorporate this into the book I am currently writing and was wanting different opinions on what it might mean. Thanks.

When I read the title, I thought you were talking about writers - we're so busy observing and contemplating and writing, when do we actually do anything adventurous?

I can imagine a pessimistic, regretfull person uttering those words, thinking about all the things he missed on, the chances to take that he ignored, and the people he may have given up for another path.

Basically, it'd come from a person who only sees chances missed, not choices made.

First thought that came to my mind - Opportunities lost or not taken.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Ditto what Cheryll said. To me, it has a connotation of safeness: not taking risks, probably because of fear. Turning one's back on both opportunity and challenge, and instead choosing a life of unrealized potential because there is no danger.

Staying in the rabbit hole forever.

for fun, I googled the phrase. I didn't realize how frequently it was used, and how many different ending people put on it, "a life less lived is a life..." it is also a song, and a book. I never did find an "originator" for it which I thought was odd. (maybe need to change the search parameters).
Anyway, to me, it is regret, as others have said, instead of living until you are "all used up" it is living always holding back or saving something for a later that may not come. Living safely instead of fully.

Interesting title though, I do like it.

Who care's if it's been used before? If you like it, and it isn't a plagerize of another work in the sense that it just came out of your head (don't you think people come up with similar things every once in a while?), use it.
