I am facing an issue in my professional life that has brought me to a point of contemplation over the very basic instincts that drive our actions and reactions to those around us. Without going into great detail about the situation I will specify the details of the needed suggestions. I am looking for a literary parallel of any kind, poem, novel, short story, essay, or even a current life event, that illustrates a moment or event when a position of power was used to exclude or eliminate others from participation based on the decision of one or a select few who feel threatened by the percieved power that one may have as a result of their knowledge; speaking to the insecurities or ignorance of those in the superior position. Example; Star Belly Sneeches by Dr. Suess, One Flew over the Coo Coos nest, etc; not in the nature of a political or global threat; more in the nature of human beings to feel threatened by those that are percieved to be superior in any way, and the consequent reaction to that fear, that drives one to eliminate the threat rather than befriend, understand or co-exist with it. Another simple example is Cinderalla and her struggle with the antagonists. I am hoping that with a few suggestions I may be steered toward the piece that speaks so vividly to the issue I am facing. My examples are similar but I am still searching for that piece or pieces that will help me draw a graceful parallel that I am hoping will illuminate the behavior and it's negative consequences. With a different perspective, using an objective example such as literature, it may be possible to bring about change and avoid more serious conflict. I am not a party in the conflict. My objective discretion is tapping my conscience like an impatient child that wishes to be heard. I must respond to the impetus that is awakening me from my silent contempt. Can anyone relate? And if so can you offer a suggestion of a literary parallel. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. pm

PS: I apologize in advance if I have posted this in the wrong forum; please move at your discretion if neccessary; I am a rookie at this.

I just finished reading the juvie fantasy novel Falcondance (third in a trilogy) and one of its themes was a small group of powerful people going to unethical extremes to exclude others from having knowledge and power. The ending of the book didn't resolve the theme though, so I'm thinking the author intends to focus on it more in book four whenever it comes out. Sorry, that's probably not a real helpful recommendation, but it was the only thing which immediately sprang to mind.

Although it may not be what you are looking for, I think that "Listen Little Man" by Wilhelm Riech is a great essay on the abuses of power.
