I recently received an (paper+envelope real) letter from a new editor who replaces the old editor who was in charge of my book. The previous woman has moved on and been replaced. Now the book itself has three authors (I am the third but was the one who wrote the proposal document) and is not due to be delivered until Dec 2007. My previous contact with the editor involved nothing more than receiving and returning the contract. But should I get in touch with the new person out of courtesy and if so do you think an email would be sufficient? I don't anticipate talking to her much for a year or so.

I think it's a good idea to acknowledge the receipt of her letter, wish her well in her new job, say you're looking forward to working with her etc. My gut feeling is doing so via an email is fine.

If I were new to a project (as the editor) I would love to hear back from the authors just to introduce myself and check in. I think it's a great (and very nice) idea!

the letter says she will be catching up with me 'in due course' and no email was provided. that felt a little 'don't call me' for a women taking over a buzy job with many books to edit.

Ah. Makes sense. But I agree that a quick e-mail (or regular letter, if you don't have her e-mail addy at this point) just to say "hi, thanks, glad to be working with you" would never be a bother.

I sent a quick email that didn't particulalry invite (or receive) a response. Can't do any harm, I suppose. I send it to the general email 'c/o' so it may never have got through.
