Hey guys...
I'm a young writer, in my teens, and have a couple of short stories on the back burner and some finished. I was thinking of beginning to send them out to different markets, if only to begin collecting rejections slips, but I'm a bit unsure about market terms.
Some of my stories fit into a genre- they are sci-fi or horror, perhaps, and I know to seek out those markets. But a lot of my writing is not genre-specific... its just, you know, a "story," in a contemporary setting with people in it... no specific romance or sci-fi elements.
Is this considered literary fiction? Do I seek out literary magazines? Or is this contemporary fiction?
I'm a little unsure, and much help would be appreciated. I want to begin sending these babies out. :)
Thanks for the help!

I think you are better suited at this point to keep away from genre specific stuff unless you are really used to it. As I have no idea of the type of setting you writing with, I am not sure I could give you a specific location. If you want to test the waters, check out the AW homepage and see if there is anything on the lists which seems it might fit. Check out websites of literary journals to see what type of content they have, and submission guidelines. Learning where you might have success takes time, a lot of writers take years to find their niche.

Around here the motto is to just keep writing and submitting. Eventually you will find your way towards your type of market.

I'd say you are in the middle of contemporary fiction with the non-genre stuff. Perhaps literary.

Look for markets that are open to new and student authors--there are a lot out there.
