I'm new here so forgive if this has been asked before: I'm writing a novel for 8-12 year olds and within the text there is need for a few illustrations--it's a first-person narrator and she refers to these pictures... do I add these pictures or just somehow note the need for them and describe what they would be? This is definitely not a picture book and I don't see the novel being illustrated in any other way... Any thoughts?
Thanks!

You would make an editor's note and describe the content of the illustration. I've seen novels like that (in fact, I've seen them in ARC form where the illustrations aren't inserted yet...that's fun to review).

Just set the information in brackets in the area where the illustration is being referenced and write something like this: [Illustration Note: A small line drawing of the tattoo would be inserted here. The tattoo is of a raven carrying a snake.]

Once you sell the book, editors can be more specific about what they want.
