How do you...?

Ok... I'm literally just beginning to write what I hope will turn out to be a novel. Up until this point, I've had unrealiable sources that could aid me in answering the question: How are dream sequences entered in novels? Are they completely italicized and then given a scene break after they're finished? Or exnay on the italics completely?

Thank you for your help.

Haruko,

I wouldn't do a dream sequence in all italics, it can become very hard on the eyes, even after more than a few sentences.

Depends on whether you want the reader to know it is a dream or not. If you want them to know, I'd use italics.

Dream sequences can be entered into in other ways other than using italics for the entire passage. Depending upon the length of the dream sequence itself, paragraph after paragraph of italics can get quite irksome.

Alrighty then. I'll keep it in normal text and just do a scene break with a follow up sentence that allows the reader to understand it was in fact a dream. Thank you guys! *rushes off to write some more*

I do like the Rod Serling avatar pic, though. But I still wouldn't use all italics, despite my admiration for Serling.
