Okay, now that I have your attention: one of the pivotal scenes in my novel is a lesbian sex scene. My novel is contemporary/literary in genre, and the scene is not particularly explicit. What do you think today's publishers will think about this? Will this help or hinder my getting published (assuming the writing, plot and character are good)?

This question is mainly academic, as I can't imagine this novel without the lesbian element included. Thank you!

If it's a male editor, well, erm, probably quite interested (Unless he's gay!)

If it's a female...

You get the idea.

Does it feature any strapons?

It depends on the publisher, and on how graphically it's written. My guess is that if it fits the novel, and fits the publisher, you'll have no problems at all.

Cheering you all on!
Look for agents/publishers that are interested in gay/lesbian issues in novels.

Have you read anything in the past 20 years? Look again, plenty of gay stuff floating around, even in mainstream.

Don't sweat it, just write it.

p.s. just because it has gay sex doesn't mean it's gay/lesbian. target your market wisely.

I agree. I've been seeing a lot more of this in recent years, where the novel is not necessarly a gay/lesbian novel (not the focus of its plot), but there may be a gay/lesbian scene or two.
