Everybody back up your files!

Don't forget!

(On a clear morning, all my power went out for no apparent reason. It's back on now... some kind of surge? Anyway, isn't it great to protect your computer with surge protectors and a battery unit to squeeze a save out and shut down clean and feel confident in your backup system? Go back your files up. You'll feel better.)

Oh, yeah. Back up early and often. Fortunately, Word 2003 saves the file I'm working on, even if the power goes off.

There is nothing more discouraging than losing a few thousand words.

I back up to CD every couple of days, at least.

Oh, I can think of a number of things more discouraging than losing a few thousand words... Hemingway's suitcase would be one of them.

CDR or CDRW?

Just out of curiosity, do you backup to a CDRW or a CDR and just buy cheap ones? When I would save my homework in college, I was paranoid that I would write over a CDRW and just used a million CDRs for various writing assignments. Is that a little neurotic? LOL

My main system is my laptop now for just this reason...built in UPS in case of power outages. Although, thanks to a thoughtful wife, I also have a UPS for our server (a.k.a. my old desktop packed with harddrives) now.

I don't think computers come with surge suppressors. They're those powerbars with the little orange illuminated on/off switch and with a red push-button reset, usually.

Yeah, losing a PP presentation you and your teammates have been working for for at least 4 hours each, just at 1 a.m., 10 hours before you have to hand it in and 6 before you go to school, when all of your teammates have already gone to sleep and not one word of the presentation got saved.

Now, I'm paranoid and backup every two or three minutes.

I've been meaning to get a flash drive, but until I get it, I've been e-mailing it to my yahoo.com account (the one that doesn't go to Outlook Express).

Yeah, I don't backup off-site anywhere near as much as I should. Which is stupid, since I've got a hosted website where I use about 1% of the available space.

Surge protectors are something you plug your computer, and everything else on your desk, into. Then you plug the surge protector into the wall socket. A computer should never be used without a good surge protector. Niether should any other expensive electronic equipment such as TVs and nice stero equipment. A surge protector is important for all equipment, but for computers they're essential. You should never, ever use a computer without one.

Around here, they range in price from about eight bucks to about forty bucks, depending on the rating, and on how many plug slot you want

Power surges can come through the lines several times each day, and almost always do. Small ones can cause trouble over time, big ones can cause trouble instantly.
