Do we still call boys swimming attire "trunks"?

Or do they just say "shorts"?

Probably depends on where you live, and on exactly what the boy is wearing. Around here, they're still called trunks, unless they're the kind that also double as shorts.

James is right, it depends on where you live. Where I am, they can be called trunks, swim trunks, swim shorts, bathing suit, bathing shorts, bathing trunks, all those convey the same image on a little boy.

If it's one of those itty bitty speedos, you could call it a "banana holder".

I just call it a bathing suit. I guess they're trunks, though. Or swim trunks.

My boys (ages four and six) call their's swim suits. Of course, when they couldn't pronounce the words well . . . it was babing soups. :D

Cheering you all on!
New question: What do you think they'll be called in the future?

I call them trunks. I think of shorts as either regular shorts which both boys and girls wear, or boxer shorts.

my son says bathing suit. Maybe it's called something different by region?

I've never used the word "bathing suit" but whenever I've heard that term I've heard it in reference to what girls wear. For boys I'll say swim trunks and for girls I'll say swimsuits.

trunks or shorts are ok - but now a days, my sister (who has two small boys) says they refer to some of them as board shorts (which are really just longer swim trunks)

i think they also wear puppy-dog tails

aren't puppy dog tails what people in the 80's called rat tails...that long strand of hair that dangled down a guy's neck while the rest of his hair is fairly short. At least that's what my son called the furry thing hanging down the nape of his neck ;)

I heard a phrase, "waddle shorts" for shorts. My son still says swim suit. Little boys will go naked at the drop of a hat. They hate clothes and shoes. They do like the idea of being able to swim and then run around in the suit all day. Changing clothes is a nuisance for them.

Hehe My four year old did that yesterday. It was the first warm day we've had so far and he was running through the yard flinging all he could fling. It was funny, but of course had to be stopped. hehe

I agree.

Don't worry about it too much. I've read books where soda is called "pop," and "hoagies" are "subs," or "gyros." So who knows what boy's bathing suits/swim trunks/board shorts will be called in the future. Use a term that seems timeless, maybe bathing suit.

I call it "pop." If I'm at work and get thirsty I might let my co-workers know that I'm going to get a can of pop. I've heard Soda Pop called soda, pop, and coke.

Hoagies are really big subs, as I recall. They're not your regular run of the mill sub sandwich like you might get at Subway, but maybe I'm mistaken on that.
