How great is it when your writing and you can see your characters and they take a life of their own. For the past two days i have been on a roll writing my novel. I hope it lasts. Cheers.:)

Terrific! It happens to me many times, and I love it, but my family doesn't. I can't tear myself away from the story or the characters. When I do finally leave the computer, I'm like a walking zombie, my mind back at the story. You know how many dinners I've messed up because of it??!

It is great...and hard to understand until it happens to you. I certainly didn't get it. My MC was going to be a happily married thirtysomething, she had other plans.

Have fun!!!!

problems i encountered

the biggest mistake i made when starting out was writing about places and people i could not relate to. I tried to copy styles of writers i enjoyed.
Finally i came to the conclusion that i had to follow my own path.
Now i write about things i know. such a huge difference.;)

Oh, man, do I hear you. I just moved the setting from the most plausible place for my story to have happened (L.A.) to a place where I've spent lots of time. I had to invent a reason for the move, but it's working so much better.

Still, it's sobering to realize that Freshman English teacher who shrieked "Write what you know, boys and girls!" was actually right.

Maryn, looking forward to the sun falling below the yardarm

Characters coming to life

One of the biggest thrills I ever get is hearing other people talk about my characters as if they know them personally. I've heard readers call them "my friends," say they are "too full of life to be confined to one book," and "they're such a neat couple." When the people you create become real to others, it's almost like giving birth...bringing whole new people into the world. It is a joy indeed!
Keep up the good work! :)

Nancy, I clicked on Snoopy - who could resist? Then minimised the window and left the music playing. Sad, aren't I?

That's called by me, "being in the groove." When I'm in the groove everybody knows to steer clear, be quiet, and bring me my food or else I may starve to death because I don't stop for anything......well, except maybe to bathe and use the - - -

best feeling

the best feeling for me would be to go into a bookstore and see my book on the shelf or in some display. To have people read my work for pleasure and entertainment would be the dream.;)

Haha! It surprises me that I even thought to do that.

Yeah, it's awesome. Also: a fire hazard. About a week ago I was writing a chapter that had been giving me a lot of trouble. I decided to make myself some mashed potatoes. I put the potatoes in the pot to boil, and set a stick of butter down by the stove to soften. I went to fiddle at my chapter.

So, an hour and a half later, I look up because the smoke alarm is going off. I'd locked all of the dogs outside and they were barking, the alarm was blaring, the house was filled with smoke. The pot was ruined, the butter all over the kitchen counter. And I had nothing to eat for dinner.

Be wary. This could happen to you.

I clicked too. Remember, we share a birthday so nice to know more about you!

Oh, yes, it is like...like seeing the myspace of someone with the same birthday!

I honestly tried to find SOMEthing there. And there was nothing.

There needs to be an "abject horror" smiley icon for moments like this... @_@
