(I asked this question on the novel boards aswell, and I thought I should get some opintions from the screenplays boards too.)
Two weeks ago I finished my first book that took me about 2 years to write. Last week I spent my time deciding what my next project would be. I had about 5 good ideas and narrowed it down to just one. Some of those ideas were for screenplays and some were for writing another book. My predicament is one of my ideas was a screenplay but as I was outlining the story I liked the characters a lot but I felt the story wasn't strong enough to carry a movie. So I put it aside thinking I might not start it as my next project. I then began working on one of my ideas for another novel. The same thing happened, the characters were great but the story and how I wanted to tell it wasn't suffice enough for a full length novel.

After thinking it over for a day. I came to the realization that both of these stories could be one. They had similar characters and the only thing that needed to change was a bit of the overall story. After tinkering around with them for a few days I had come up with a new idea, by taking some good plot points and characters that I liked from each story. Now the problem I have is I don't know whether to make this story into a screenplay or a novel. Any suggestions or help on how I could make this decision would be great. Thanks.

LA, unfortunately.
My initial thought is does it conform well to three act structure? If so, maybe a movie is what you want. But if it's significantly more episodic then perhaps a novel may be better.

Also, what is the scope and possible length of the story? A screenplay is decidedly less content than a 500 page novel (see: how short stories make better screenplays than novels and how much gets cut out of a 500 page novel to be made into a screenplay).

good luck =)

Dare I suggest the answer may be: whichever you prefer to write.

As you know, adapted screenplays tend to be the main plotline of a novel, with subplots and secondary characters ruthlessly cut (or sometimes merged, e.g. two or more similar characters become one) if there's no room for them.

Just how complex is your story and its characters?

My vote

is for which you prefer to write.

AND, have you tried screenplays before? You didn't mention that.
What do you know about screenplays?
Have you read any?
Read any books?

I'm not trying to sound arrogant or superior or anything like that.
I'm just asking if you are aware of what you are choosing between.

If you know, if you understand, then cool.

Outline your idea and see how fast and simple it moves.
Does it have a fast, crisp, clear beginning, a longer, drawn out middle, and a sharp finish?
How long do you think it will be? Remember most films run between 90 to 120 minutes, with comedies being on the shorter end, dramas on the longer end. That's an hour and a half to two hours. One minute of screen time equals one page of script. SO, a comedy script would come in at between 85 to 100 pages. Dramas at 109 to NO more then 120.

If you can write short sweet, fragmented sentences that really pack a punch, then go with screenwriting.

If you love words, if you like long sentences, lots of detail, plenty of subplots, in depth character studies, all those wonderful novel things, OH and complete freedom to write what ever, then you need to do Novels.

Der Spieler

I can't believe nobody's asked this yet. Is it VISUAL?

You could have the best story in the world but if it doesn't translate to screen there's no point writing a screenplay.

Can you tell your story in images and actions, or will it require internal monologues to make the most of your characters? That's the question you need to ask yourself.

My first post btw. This seems like a pretty good forum. Yet another place to procrastinate :)

We thought of that

we were just saving it for you! :)

Welcome to the board.

Actually Der has the best point of all.
Can you tell your story in pictures?
Do you SEE the movie in your head?
Can you write what you SEE?
Can almost all of your story be told through actions and behaviors or does it require lots of explanation?

I decided to write another novel but instead go with a completely different idea. I am about to attend film school in a few months and will keep my idea for the screenplay till then because I can see how it can be done for a really low budget. Thanks for all the replies and advice.
