Glad you had a great beer-guzzling weekend.

Sounds like you are still on top of your projects despite all the distractions. Just don't give up.
:star :star
C'mon and play with the challenge! 1,000 words, any words, every day. You don't have to market them. This is just an exercise in um... exercise. Keep a journal. Write a song. write stream of consciousness crap if that's all that comes out.

You know you wanna play. ;)

Sorry to hear about your water troubles. Hate plumbing.
I do believe you did the right thing in graciously declining Frank's help even before he offered. (Heck, if he won't report in, the least we can do is talk about him.)

As for your accomplishments, you did a good job. Got any markets in mind for your humor thingy? I wish you the best of luck.

I'll tell you the same thing I told Cate. Come do the challenge. You know you wanna. The whole point is to show ourselves just how much we can write if we have a goal to meet each and every day. It's writing for the sake of writing. Nothing more. Nothing less. Come play!

Welcome Weekenders,
This has been a very BUSY and productive week. For those of you monitoring the 1k per day challenge, so far so good. Since Nov. 1st, (between the three deadlines this week and working on Monster) I've written 6,207 words. And I haven't included anything today. Late starters are welcome to join in. I promise, you won't be sorry you did.

Looked ahead at my calendar for next week and lo and behold, I only have one deadline (Monday) and I've already completed it! That means I'll write my weekly humor essay (yes, I'm finishing up the one for this week today) and my schedule will be free for cramming in major work on the rewrite, plus working on a few of my new projects.

So, how about you? Is everyone ready to stand and deliver?

JEN: See? First on my list this week. So, how about it? Is real life leaving you any time to write? Subbed any new greeting cards?

Ace: Any better luck with the weekly humor essay? Any new links for us? ;)

CC: Well? Now that you've passed the 20k mark, I guess the race is on to the finish. How is it going?

Cate: Glad you decided to join us for the 1k 2day challenge. Progress? How's the new assignment? BTW: hope the pooch is doing okay.

Melina: I'm holding Chloe responsible for making Bud moody this week. I hope she is happy. So, what has she churned out for you this week? Or did vacation take too much out of you?

Mr. A.: Are you still out there with us?

Lori: So, tell me. Now that you've tried the challenge, do you feel productive? Got a total for the week? Hmm? Do you have an estimated completion date for TBWN, yet? What is your goal?

Mac: Cough up some numbers. How did you do this week after accepting the challenge? Is Weird getting closer to the finish line?

Nita: Hopefully you've got the plumbing under control by now. Tell me, how are you doing with your writing? Any new submissions this week? There's still time to come join the challenge *hint-hint*. It'll do wonders for productivity -- and you might just surprise yourself.

Ruth: Did you beat Ally this week? She was on a roll. I can't wait to hear an update.

Mike: Um... testing... testing... is this thing on? MIKE!! Can you hear me now? Good. What's going on out there?

Frank: I'm worried. You've been too quiet. And you were last spotted with tools and a hockey helmet. You okay out there?

Elonna: *whew* I was afraid you disappeared again. Don't worry, 300 words is 300 words. I really think you should jump into the 1k per day challenge. Does wonders for productivity. ;)

Ally: Keeping the faith, girl? Hanging in there and writing your little heart out? You can do it. Besides, you can't let your mom show you up, can you? Is the nanowrimo book a different book than the other two?

Lisa: By all accounts, you seem to be among the missing again. *pained sigh* I swear, as if I don't have enough to do, I have to keep rounding up the stragglers. Oh, there you are, way back on the 25th. Looks like we need to nudge you into the challenge, too. Come play!

Okay out there. You know the way this works. You press the keys and make words and they magically appear on the screen for everybody else to see. Go on. Press the buttons. You know you wanna.

Assorted Lurkers and other playmates: Come on in! The more the merrier! And if you want to take the November Challenge, there is no cut-off date. Just come play!

Oh, and RAY? I haven't forgotten you. If you get a chance to post, I wanna hear progress!

Hello-
New assignment is done--in--and contract signed. It will be published in Dec, and I have another being pubbed in Jan. Didn't write 1,000 today, but did make up for it yesterday--wrote my brains out. I would say I am about even so far . . .

Pup comes home in the am--which is why I've got no writing done today . . . busy running around stocking up for a long 6-week recovery period. He has a 8-inch scar and is shaved. Had to buy carpet runners, treats, orthepedic bedding, etc.

I am exhausted.
Should be on target from here on out since I will be laid up w/ the pup.
Thanks for the good thoughts!
Cate

Congrats to everybody who accomplished much! :)

I didn't. :huh

Feeling a bit under the weather so all I managed was the column, a tweak and sub of another piece and a few hours scouring the net for new markets.

The furnace did stop working on Thursday but I called a non-helmet-wearing pro in to deal with it. It needed a new thermocoupler or something. Luckily the cost was covered under my parts plan.

The weather man is promising cold, wet conditions for much of next week so if I feel perkier I might just dust off my fishing stuff and try to rassle with some steelhead and salmon. <-------next week's excuse ;)

Yeshanu

Hmm...

A bit of a duplication here, but with a bit more info:

7095 words so far on my NaNo novel. It's only a novel in the sense that The Silmarillion or David Eddings The Rivan Codex is a novel -- it's background for my other novel (the one I've been trying to revise). But it's all new words, and writing out the history of my novel is helping me understand character motives and will definitely add some depth to the finished product.

Hand wrote about 8 more pages on my non-fic book, and started typing it out on my computer. So far 2300 words typed, but a lot more written. I'd guess the thing's close to 6 or 7k now.

Got another assignment handed in on time, and one more written up a whole week ahead of time!

Plus, as a bonus, a novel idea I dreamed up while I was asleep one night many years ago is starting to take a more definite form. May be able to start writing early in the new year, if the ideas keep coming!

Plus, if you read the NaNo thread on the novel writing board, you'll know that on Mondy I cleaned just about the whole house! Only thing I didn't do was the carpets, so Friday I went out and bought myself a new vacuum, and yesterday I vacuumed.

Now if only I could remember what it is I took? :wha

Oh...

Almost forgot to tell y'all -- yesterday Ally and I spent four hours in a line-up at Chapters, waiting to meet Tamora Pierce. She said that she really admires NaNo writers, and she writes about 60k (one book, probably) in 90 days. So perk up, folks, 'cause that's not even meeting Barb's 1k 2day challenge. Now if only our words were as good as hers... :b

MacAl Stone
11-08-2004, 08:42 AM
I'm hanging in! :jump Barb's 1K per day challenge has been awesome, and I'm getting sort of addicted to the sensation. I'm thinking that BIC is all well and good--but a required daily word count is even better...

:grin

Lori Basiewicz
11-08-2004, 01:20 PM
I have to agree with Mac. Barb's challenge has shown me I produce far more with a required wordcount than with a required amount of writing time. The words aren't necessarily good, but it is forward movement.

More precisely this week, I have:

Written 7105 new words in TBWN. After deleting 408 words, I have a net gain of 6697 words. My current word count is 58427. (Eh, doesn't look like I'm moving backwards this week, does it, Barb? ;) )

Also, I wrote 650 words in the pigeon story. I resubbed the Werewolf story, had it rejected again, and sent it back out to yet another possible market. Oh, and I finally got the newsletters that were sitting in my living room mailed.

Kida Adelyn
11-08-2004, 08:31 PM
(my mum stole my news, darn:( I also met someone right behind me in line who's obsessed with T.P. (duh), HP, LOTR, and is doing Nanowrimo. Was alot of fun talking to her.)

After this mornings writing session, my word count on my Nano novle is 10k +23 words.
I'm so incredibly proud of myself.:jump I feel like jumping around the room so I'm gonna go do that now.

Decided against it. Would be bad for my CD player.

A tad late, I know.

So far, the attempt at a weekly column is an uphill battle. The latest attempt petered out after 200 words. I think I need to rethink and refocus, maybe come up with a theme to work with.

On a brighter note, the new story is up to 2,000 words. There's a minor plotpoint I may have to rework, but we'll see.

A story came back so I have to resubmit to the next market on the list.

Sorry I have been so reclusive and mysterious. I am making tremendous progress but I have not been measuring it so much in words.

If I'm not on to something, why I'll eat my hat.

So I am well into several works and I am having great fun doing it.

in addition I sent some of my "Tour Diary" writings (based on my tenure as a Tiger Cruise VIP) to some Officers that were involved and they are encouraging me to write much more. Let's just say that my Tiger Cruise was just a tad more interesting than others......
(one is a Vice-Admiral)

Right now I am not worried about the flavor of my hat. (notice I didn't say I would eat my undies? There's a limit to self confidence!)

I hand-wrote 7 pages (full pages-not steno) on the Butcher/Grinder short story last week. Then, yesterday, my hubby spilled coffee all over the pages and the blue lines ran :smack

I gotta confess: I'm stumbling over subbing any greeting cards. Can't seem to get my head together (and my time) to corral 10 ideas and a cover letter into the mailbox. Hoping to get on top of this problem by Friday.

Other aggravations: internet/phone problems :bang car problems :teeth kiddo's friends problems :shrug AND TOO MUCH RETCHED LAUNDRY! :head

Give a raspberry to your coffee-spilling spouse from me. Hope things get better soon, and the ideas get unstuck from your head. I know they're in there, and they're brilliant!

Just thought y'all might like to know (or maybe not) that I got an "A" on my "Home, Homelessness and Homecoming in a Really Famous Book" essay, :grin and the prof asked for his very own copy to keep! Since he writes books on the topic, maybe it will show up some time in a book. I'm gonna look around for journals or mags that publish stuff like that -- there must be somewhere I can find a home for it, and if it's a bit short, I can even double the length. It just seems too good for me to have only one person other than myself read it.

Any ideas?

11-12-2004, 08:11 PM
It's Friday! That means it's time to own up to what you did and did not accomplish this week. Is everybody ready?

I have to say, the 1k 2day challenge is going quite well for me. I set out on Saturday of last week to write 10k (in the rewrite of Monster) by this Sunday. As of yesterday, I've written 11,366 words for the week! Unfortunately, my humor essay a week plan has fallen by the side at the moment as I struggle to finish up the second draft of the novel by the end of the month. I think I can… I think I can… I think I can… Oh, and don't tell the deadline deities… but I have no deadlines next week either. This thing might just get done!

I'm still outlining humor ideas, even though I didn't complete one this week. And I plan to do a little more thinking on the new nonfic project. I need to take some time to go through the research I dragged home from the library. Ah, so many books, so little time.

That's it for me this week. How's by you? Any sales to report? New contracts? New projects? New dreams?

Jen: See? You are still at the top of my list. But I wanna hear some progress this week. You got that? PROGRESS. Did you recover the coffee-stained story?

Mike: Okay, Mr. Mysterious. Give us a little hint. True life thriller? Tale of justice gone awry? Give us a genre at least, for Pete's sake. Or give your project a goofy handle like "Fred". We want to cheer you on and it would be easier if we didn't have to refer to say things like: Hey, Mike, how's the mystery project with no identifying features going?

Frank: Hope you are feeling better. Salmon only count as an excuse if you've flash frozen some and are mailing it to me. I'll send my address. ;) How about an update?

Lori: What's the word on TBWN? How is the 1k 2day goal working out for you? How's the marketing going? Did you get that pigeon story out… and is Ruth in it?

Ray: Still on a leave of absence. We miss you.

Lisa: Oh where, oh where has my sugarmuffin gone?

Nita: Did you ever decide to play, Nita. It's not too late to jump in for the final pre-holiday rush! Next month's challenge will be easier. (Oops! Did I say that out loud?) Have you written anything this week?

Mac: Sound off! What have you accomplished this week? New subs? Hmm?

Ace: did you have any better luck with the humor this week? As you can see from my news, mine went nowhere. Mostly because I didn’t look at it, but still, nowhere. Did you get that story resubmitted?

Mr. A. : Last call on the list! Hope you come back and rejoin the group.

Cate: How's the pup? How's the 1k 2day goal going? Are you a multitasking fool this week?

Elonna: More than 300 words this week, right? Right? If nothing else, try timed writing exercises. Sit down for ten minutes (or five, even), pick a topic and write nonstop. They don't have to be good words. If you get stuck, write "I am stuck" until you think of something else. But keep the pen moving, or your fingers moving on the keyboard. It's amazing what your subconscious will cough up when forced.

Ruth: How's that friendly competition with your daughter going? Still keeping up with your school work and racing for that 50k mark in Nanowrimo? BTW: Good going on your essay! Hope it finds a home.

Ally: And how about you, little lady? You keeping up with everything? Or are you still jumping up and down?

CC: WTG on finishing up FATL! Stars for you this week already! What's next? You've got all that spare lunch time now, better make good use of it. http://www.newmommie.com/images/smilies/dance.gif

Melina: Back from vacation? Did you bring us something good? Huh? Huh? Bud says to tell Chloe "Hi" *sigh*. Hope you are back in the writing groove.

Okay, folks, let me have it! All of it. Even that little bit wadded up in a tight little ball in your pocket. Good news, bad news, I'll take anything at this point.

Lurkers and Hangers On: Come out and play. We don't bite. Well, except for Ray, but he's on vacation. If you don't want to play in our sandbox, take the 1k 2day challenge and post in the other thread. Try it for a week. You'll be glad you did.

Melina

Well, I didn't write while on vacation. I did, however, manage to pull off 2 email interviews for my WIP. When I got home from vacation, I went to work and got really sick. Had to be carted off in an ambulance. Turns out I have gallstones (too weird for me, 'cause I never even knew what the symptoms were until I read Allion's post here...), and I get to have lovely surgery sometime in the very near future. Boy, does that ever suck--felt like a four-hour-long childbirth contraction. At least during childbirth, the contractions stop for a minute and let you catch your breath. Anyway, didn't do anything this week either. I have a lot of catching up to do. Barring any further excruciating pain, I plan on getting my article finished this week. Great job, Ruth, Ally and Charlie! Sorry I missed your parties. Chloe showed up after being awol for a couple of days with a "B" tatooed on her neck. I think it's for Bud...

I'd just like to thank my fingers for not cramping as I raced to the finish line yesterday. Next up: contact my beta's about novel #2 that's been in their hands since BEFORE I STARTED FATL!!!!

Then I want to go back over FATL and flesh it out in the second draft, see if I can get it up to novel length. I have this habit in first drafts of writing almost excusively about events with very little background or setting stuff.

I also want to prep a query to an agent, and I'm thinking FATL might be the best work to catch their attention, but seeing as it's not finished, I'm not quite sure how to structure the query.

Any suggestions, friends?

Hanging in there . . .
Puppy is too, but it has been a rough ride. I didn't make every day, but I averaged 1,000 (a little over, actually) so . . . does that count?
I am really trying here . . .
Managed to get in a few follow-ups on queries too . . .

The bad news is I haven't done much on the novel (bad Lisa, bad bad), but the good news is I got the corporate editing job that will keep me fairly busy for at least the next month.

The thing is, not writing is making me feel sick, and then when I sit down to write I feel sick because I feel so behind.

http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/sad/1/sad49.gifWriting is hard!http://www.planetsmilies.com/smilies/sad/1/sad49.gif It was impossible to get much writing done this week. Only about 5000 words.

Acctually, on normal terms I did very well for myself, but I'm so hopelessly behind on my word count for Nano, and my life keeps asking for attention. (greedy life, grrrrrr)

I'm going to try and go for 30k on the novel this month. That way I'll be doing an average of 1k per day. Then I'll be proud of myself and I'll try Nano again next year.

Go everyone:thumbs

All I have been working on are exercises. Can't get my mind wrapped around WIPs. I wrote about a total of 1000 words this week, but nothing good :(

I'm here. I'm awake. Really.

This sleep-writing talent that started manifesting itself last month is really interesting. And quite humorous. Have discovered that if I force myself to write when I'm really, really tired and doze off over my keyboard, my hands keep moving and weird elements from my dreams start appearing in my WIPs.

So far, I've had a woman who was flirting with someone start musing about cost comparative analysis, impregnated my male lead in the pigeon story, and turned australia into a verb. Have no idea what it means to australia, but it does sound interesting, doesn't it?

Okay, this weeks report:

TBWN: Had a net gain of 3448 words. Actually wrote quite a bit more words than that into TBWN, but kept having to go back and delete huge chunks that needed reworked, too.

OTHER: Wrote about 200 words in the pigeon story.

Not much else to report this week. Maybe I should australia the cost comparative analysis of that pregnancy? Or maybe not.

(Hmm. For some reason, the previous poster and I are beginning to sound alike. :ack )

Um, report. Yes, yes. Report.

Oh.

Um...

Right. Get to it. Only about 800 words on my NaNo project, and less than that on my non-fic, plus one 1400 word essay. Still keeping up on the school stuff (which is absolutely unheard-of for this point in the semester :grin ) but RL seemed to hit with a vengeance this week, as evidenced by the fact that this is the first time I've logged in since last Wednesday. :cry

Ah, well. Hoping for better this coming week. Frank, I'll send you the essay. My prof also had a suggestion or two, and he just sent me an email about a call for papers from the C.S. Lewis Foundation, so perhaps my academic writing career is about to take off. Who knows? That same prof has also agreed to mentor me through the process of writing and hopefully publishing my non-fic book, so I'm excited about that.

Now back to the old writing notebook...

Barb,

Thanks for thinking of me. I am writing like crazy now.

OK, a brief:

#1: Based on True Story. (not your typical whiney done-me-wrong)
American Dream turned to nightmare: The story of a young couple buying and renovating a home. Bright eyes for the future suddenly turn dim when their property is virtually condemned and they are told they stand to lose everything with no possibility of compensation. There was a certain mistake made long ago which rendered a property worthless. The problem is, no one could ever figure out what the error was. Protagonist goes back in thought, theory and mind to 1895 and rebuilds the City of Fort Lauderdale to the present. The vicious fight that ensues pits one man against City Hall and a slew of other powerful "In" politicos.
If only he could find that blasted mistake he keeps hearing about...A full fledged historical forensic mystery.

#2: Novel surrounding factual events:
Action / Adventure / Mystery. Protagonist has modern paramilitary skills. In addition to an exploration of modern urban warfare, the plot takes us to the ugly side of corporate law and business: Legal frauds and murder. This stuff really happens. And I was there…..

#3:A mystery club novel. (some of y’all are in this one.)
A group of people get together to solve media mysteries.
The techniques used are based on successes I have had doing this in business and hobby.
They reward themselves with prizes and a monthly kitty. One guy seems to win more than the others. One day, he vanishes. The rest tries to find him using the scantiest of clues.

#4: My adventures aboard a Navy Nuclear Missile Cruiser in rough seas during maneuvers. An embellished true story with humor and adventure. You never know what I will do next....

#5: An Expose of the statistical goals of Law Enforcement. The entire theme can be summarized with the following statement:

“If they really wanted to stop you from speeding through a school zone, the cops would be at the beginning of the zone slowing you down, not after the zone writing tickets.”

Unfortunately the potential for harm is already passed when law is enforced instead of preventive enforcement.
The operations extend way beyond simple traffic tickets, however. And yes, there is a story. And a fight! Why do I do this to myself?

Mike

Oh, Great! Now Bud really won't do anything.

I strongly suspect that when it comes to women, he is like a dog chasing cars. Now that he's caught one, he has no idea what to do with it.

I hope you are writing now. Gotta make up for that vacation slacking. ;)

I hope you feel better and get your gall bladder taken care of soon.

Hey, good going, Charlie!

As for the query on an unfinished MS... I'm afraid I'm not much help on that one. I can offer suggestions but as I've never done it, I don't know how valid they would be. I think I'd write the query as if the MS were finished (you'll have it done pretty quick anyway). Anybody else have any pointers here?

Good luck!

Considering everything you've got going on, I think we'll give you a star anyway.

Hope puppy continues to improve and that you continue writing like mad whenever you can.

Congrats on the editing job :star

Go back to the timed writing for the novel. It may not be a lot of progress, but at least it will keep you moving forward. ten minutes... just ten minutes.

Hang in there.

batyler65
11-16-2004, 02:48 AM
Don't be so hard on yourself. You had a busy week, and still managed 5k! That's excellent! :star

So you're a bit behind for nano, it's okay. Just keep going. Do as much as you possibly can, you'll be that much closer to completion, so what if it isn't right at the end of the month?

Keep the faith.

ALL writing is GOOD writing. If exercises are all you can manage it, so be it. Make journal entries, do timed writing. You'll get back in the swing of things with those WIPs soon.

Keep writing!

Good going, as usual. Glad you are learning to sleep write. That HAS to be productive somewhere, right? :ha

Maybe the verb form of "Australia" means: To impregnate male characters in pigeon stories?

Are we nearing THE END, yet? Huh? Huh?

11-16-2004, 02:54 AM
Um. Glad to hear the school work isn't suffering.

800 words. 800 words? Ruth! get cracking! :whip
I think you need to carve out a little more time.

Take that writing notebook everywhere!

*Whew*
Okay, you wore me out just reading about all the projects you've got going. I'll say one thing, you are in no danger of getting bored!

I wish you the best of luck with all of them. Keep us posted on your progress. I suspect you might just turn out to be one of those authors with multiple books on the bestsellers list at the same time.

;)

Thanks Barb. Hey I've seen those books on top of the bestsellers. They were laid on top and stayed there for years unnoticed while people bought the books in the racks.

Other uses for my books include:

*Door stops
*table levelers.
*targets for kids with new pellet guns. C'mon admit it, everyone did that
*Quick start fire logs
*Leaf flatteners for kids with school projects.
*worm food

Wow, yarmy. You remind me of that guy on the old Ed Sullivan Show who would spin fifteen or twenty plates at a time. Go, man Go!

Barb, I think I'll start work on the second draft and prep the query. When I reach the point where I should have the draft finished in the same amount of time they say they'll take to respond, I'll send the query off.

Bad News: It's not Friday
Good News: It's only 2 days away (And that's my day off AND kiddo is spending the night at a friend's house that night ;) )

Bad News: Hubby spilled coffee.
Good News: At least he doesn't drink grape juice, so the short story is salvagable.

Bad News: My car's idle is too high and the brakes are scraping metal.
Good News: I get to work faster AND I haven't driven into the bayou.

Bad News: I got rejections back from Oatmeal.
Good News: I know just who to send them to next.

Bad News: No word from Novellas Images yet.
Good News: No news is good news.

Bad News: Since I started the job, I barely have time to eat.
Good News: I'm losing weight like a vegetarian cannibal. (18 more pounds to my goal! I've dropped 4 pant sizes)

Bad News: I'm trying to overcome some heavy guilt about slacking off/lacking time to write.
Good News: This won't last forever. I know others here overcome these same problems, and I can take some strength some each of you.

Short-term-baby-step-GOAL: I've dedicated tomorrow afternoon exclusively to greeting card submissions ... and eating... and a nap as a reward.

One day at a time, right?

Hugs for everybody - Jen

Good going, Jen. (for the good news)

Hugs (for the bad news)

One day at a time is right. It will pass, things will settle down. Just squeeze the writing time in when you can.

Glad this thread is back in business...

About the rat:

She takes her notebook everywhere, too. And ends up reading her books, if she has the time. :p

I'm doing better so far this week, I think. Full report Monday morning, as is usual for me.

Frank, I sent you an email. Did you get it?

We have taken this party to a new thread because, believe it or not... I'm not superhuman. I didn't want to run the risk of having folks posting to both threads, so I'm leaving this one locked.

Please come play at the new Weekend Progress Report thread!

See ya there.
