View Full Version : 1K 2Day

In this week's WPR, Barb proposed a challenge to anyone foolish, er brave, enough to accept it. She challenged each of us to write 1000 words each and every day in the month of November.

So as not to clutter up WPR, I am taking the initiative to start a new thread so the thrill-seekers who have taken Barb up on this challenge can commiserate and encourage one another. Everyone else should feel free to torment us mercilessly.

Today was the first day in Barb's 1K 2Day Challenge. I was worried at first that I was going to stumble straight out of the gate, but after a late and shaky start, I finished with 1200 words written today.

Yay, Lori! Way to go!:thumbs

I managed 1,566 words on day one.

I added another 750 words to FATL yesterday, but like you all know, I only have an hour for lunch in which to write. I know I won't be able to do near that much every day, so I must regretfully and officially opt out of the challenge.

Though I accept the role of tormentor with glee. :evil

I wrote 1800 words yesterday, because I am doing Nano, but I guess I can do both chanllenges.:b

Yay, ALLY! good for you with nano. You have to write more than us anyway... you might as well play in our challenge too.

Whee! This is fun!

My progress for the day as of this post:

1,300 words.

Still have some more work ahead, as I have a noon deadline tomorrow.

Way to go, Ally! You, too, Barb. Excellent.

I divided my time between two different projects today and completed a total 1146 words.

Starting in a little late, but I am on board.

Did 1,000 on Tuesday.
So far, so good.

Thanks Barb!!

This is a challenge, but I am finding that it is kicking out my productivity in a great way.

It is 10 am on Wed. and I have already written 1,010 words today!!

This is fun-
Thanks for giving me the push to do it!

*raises hand*

Whipmistress Barb? I have a question?

If I delete the 1000 words I wrote on Monday and replace them with 1000 different words today, does that still count towards the challenge?

Monday's words were written for a scene in TBWN. A member of my writing group looked at them and pointed out that the voice for the barracuda-like character was all wrong. Glancing back over them, I have to agree. And I think I know how to fix it now.

batyler65

I'm up for discussion, but I think if they are NEW words, they count.

Oh, CC, you don't know this character. She is always fast. Not quite loose, unless it suits her, but definitely fast. :grin

Must beat Ally

Um... Ruth, should we be calling child protective services?

MacAl Stone
11-04-2004, 01:00 PM
Okay--eked out 1100 words on the WIP on Monday, didn't write yesterday (election day and all--and I spent around 12 hours driving)

But managed to do a little over 700 words on the blog (http://macallisterstone.blogspot.com/) rant about the election results...and another 412 words in the WIP--which is nearing the 30K point.

What an awesome idea this was! :grin

Kida Adelyn
11-04-2004, 07:17 PM
I didn't get much done yesterday :head My word couts only at around 4000, should be 5100. :head Stupid life, keeps interfering.

batyler65
11-04-2004, 09:12 PM
Ally: don't be so hard on yourself. Just try to make it up at the next writing session. 4,000 words in 4 days is nothing to sneeze at.

batyler65
11-04-2004, 09:19 PM
You get a reprieve for having to drive so far to vote.

But despite that lapse, you are still kicking butt with the rest of us!

Keep it up!

Update: I caught up on my word count so I have 6824 word written so far. That means I wrote a lot today. Now I'm going to die from exaustion.http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/schlafen/sleeping-smiley-004.gif

Lori Basiewicz
11-05-2004, 11:46 AM
So, last night, I deleted 408 words and wrote 1104. Tonight, I wrote 1001. Just like the Arabian Nights. Each one different. Well, maybe there were a few duplicates. Can I go to bed now?

MacAl Stone
11-05-2004, 01:52 PM
1052 words today...and it's only 11:21 p.m. or thereabouts, here--so that still counts as today, right?

Lori Basiewicz

After completing the first five days of the 1K 2day challenge, I have written a total of 5519 new words, most of them, but not all, in TBWN. Those of you who participate in WPR may remember that last week Barb was teasing me about TBWN moving backwards. It's grown by leaps and bounds this week. Not all the words are good words, many will not survive the impending rewrites, but the story is moving forward once again.

As I've watched the word count grow, even on a day when I whined because I was exhausted and a fellow challenger had to cajole me into writing my 1K, I've had some mixed emotions about the outcome. Pride of accomplishment, certainly. A look at how much I've done giddy feeling. But, early in the week, I also felt a little guilt, because I knew if I'd been even a fraction as dedicated as I'd been in the last week, this story might actually be done by now.

It's led me to be a little introspective about my writing habits and to examine them a little more closely and to consider what is and is not working for me.

Have any of you other 1K 2dayers experienced similar things as you've progressed?

batyler65
11-07-2004, 01:34 AM
Lori,
I know what you mean. It's funny how our perceptions of our abilities change when we push ourselves. I'm always amazed at how little time it actually takes to get to 1,000 words if I will just sit down and focus on WRITING them.

Since the 1K 2Day challenge doesn't specify "novel" here's my word count for the week:

7095 on NaNo novel
2300 typed (got more on paper, handwritten) on non-fic book
928 typed on school assignment, with one more handwritten assignment done.

Must beat Ally... :ack

(Barb, don't call the child protection people. Ally doesn't need it -- I'm only trying to beat her at writing, and she's the one who's beating me. Is there any protection service for parents?) :b

Kida Adelyn
11-08-2004, 08:35 PM
10k on Nano novel.

You know, mum. You would beat me if you wrote every day.
That's what 1k2day is supposed to be for.

Go everyone!:clap

-Ally

Lori Basiewicz
11-08-2004, 09:27 PM
Actually, Ally, if you add up all of your mum's totals, she did beat you in the overall count. She wrote 10323 total words per the counts she posted.

But you're right. Just think what she could do if she did write just a little bit each and every day, even on the days when she doesn't have time.

(Edited for coherency.)

total between an essay draft for the blog, a new short story scene, and the novel, for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday is 3089--and I got two stories sent back out to the next markets on their lists to collect their fair share of rejections. :jump

Now I have to go do 2day's 1K

(She doesn't need to be told to write, just in case y'all wondered. Competition seems to be good for her soul.)

Keep up the good work all-

I have been pretty good-hit 1,000 minimum all but one day (due to doggie duty) although today is looking bleak.

I missed the mark on Wednesday this week, too, Cate.

I've made it every other day so far, and even wrote an amazing 2400 words on Tuesday, but that's no excuse. On Wednesday. I just got tied up filling out some forms for a career change I'm working on and fell asleep over my keyboard while trying to finish up my 1K. Funny thing is, when I do that, my fingers keep moving and weird elements from a semi-dream state that make absolutely no coherent sense start appearing in my WIP. It can make for interest reading. I gave up after 400 words and went to bed.

Have you figured out a way to convince the puppy he really is sick and shouldn't be playing yet?

batyler65

My grand, grand total for the week: 12,370 words! Woo-hoo!

Highest word count on Tuesday at 3,055
Lowest today at 1,034.

Good work people!

Puppy is trying, but he is--well--puppy. I am sick w/ stress, but am still writing when I can. Some days over 1,000, and a couple under . . .

Lori Basiewicz
11-15-2004, 10:15 PM
Well, last week I wrote 7522 words, which sounds like I might have made the 1K total each and every day, but I didn't. I only wrote 415 words on Wednesday, 793 words on Friday, and 0 words on Sunday. On Sunday, I was busily avoiding the second half of the current scene in TBWN. My brain's starting to feel like it's going to implode under the weight, so I'm going to have to get it out and onto paper soon. :head

How's everyone else doing with the challenge?

Yes, I am tormented. :evil I was so hoping to be able to prod and goad, but alas, you are all too good.

batyler65
11-16-2004, 09:34 AM
Well, CC if it makes you feel any better, I'm not sure I've made my 1k 2day goal for today, and I sure as heck didn't make it yesterday (no writing at all.) Today, I went backwards more than I went forward as I struggle to sort out these (expletives deleted) scenes. I ended up with more words than I started with, and replaced lots of deleted material, but I have NO idea how many new words I actually wrote. :smack

I sure could have used you to torment me yesterday, CC. I only wrote 235 words. No worries. Back on track today. Really. Or at least I will be as soon as I starting writing this evening.

Cate
11-18-2004, 09:28 PM
Although I haven't hit 1,000 every day this week--I have 2 go-aheads for mags, so I will definately make it up over the weekend.
Cate

batyler65
11-18-2004, 10:13 PM
YAY, Cate!

I don't know if I've hit 1k on any day this week. still struggling with the rewrite and still no good system for determining how many new words I've added. Although, my complete word count for the entire MS has only varied by about 200 words on any given day. (And that is after spending four and five hours per day at the thing.)

Blowtorch anyone?

Barb

MacAl Stone
11-19-2004, 12:47 AM
Hmmm--we all seem to have hit a lag space at the same time. I'm struggling too--I've only been making somewhere between 200-500 words each day this week...:(

Goad, prod and NAG, CC--go for it!

ChunkyC
11-19-2004, 01:52 AM
It would be a guilty pleasure. I myself wrote nada yesterday. Mind you, on my lunch hour I had to go to the bank and renew my mortgage. I hate it when a kid younger than my daughter tells me how to manage my finances.

I've gotten myself back on track the last couple of days. Finally got the scene written I'd been avoiding and things are moving almost on their own again.

Thing is, this has become a habit, a good habit. I can see myself continuing the 1K 2Day long after November '04 has faded into dust.

How's everyone else doing with the challenge? Getting over your own slumps? CC, have you regained the ability to taunt us by writing on your on WIPs?

batyler65
11-20-2004, 02:18 AM
Hey...

Well, after running around in circles all week writing and rewriting some of these scenes trying to make everything flow and not wander off into the land of nonsense... I'm left with this vague notion that I worked very hard but had nothing to show for it.

I'm happy to report that as of today, I'm back on track and have gotten my 1k 2day! I also have a big chunk of time to devote to my project tomorrow, so I'll try to make up for lost time.

~B

Lori Basiewicz
11-23-2004, 06:21 AM
How's everyone else doing with this? I'm finding the goal of writing 1K every day is actually making me write, but... I had two days where I wrote less than 300 words last week and then I didn't write any on Sunday.

I've been taking Sundays off for a while now and it's hard to break that habit -- I have to have at least one day to sleep in, run errands, recycle the stacks of paper lying about, etc. -- so after November or even during November, I'll probably keep slacking on Sundays.

batyler65
11-23-2004, 10:02 PM
I'm giving it a solid effort... but some days the words flow like cold tar. Or worse, I do things like discover I need to cut four whole pages which makes my word count go the WRONG way! ACCCK!

And right now, the holidays are threatening to kick my butt.

Barb

I am not writing 1,000 a day, but I may be averaging that. It does help, and I think we should do this again in Jan!

I didn't write on my novel two days in a row. Ack. Must keep going.
I did write on other things though.
I think after nov. I'm going to do 5k a week. It'll give me some slack because mondays don't exist and sundays come pretty darn close:p
