It just occurred to me to start a threat where people can learn and explain the different abreviations. Sometimes, when I'm reading a thread, abeviations appear that I haven't seen before. Anyway I thought I'd throw out a few and hope people do the same. It will certainly help out, especially for new people.

Off the top of my head,
MC - Main character
MS - Manuscript
POV - Point of View
IMO - In My Opinion
WIP - Work In Progress
NIP - Novel In Progress

Hehe, that's funny. I've never seen NIP before. Can't help but see someone saying "I can't go to the Pub, I need to stay home and work on my NIP." :)

Only others I can think of at the moment are:

FWIW - For What It's Worth
IOW - In Other Words
BIC - Butt In Chair
BTW - By The Way
LOL - Laugh Out Loud
ROFL - Rolling On Floor Laughing
IMHO - In My Humble Opinion

(Some boards -- though not this one as far as I can see, go too far with the text-speak...using things like UR for "you are" or, in this sentence, they'd use AFAICS for "as far as I can see".)

Also, over in Romance, I wrote up a thread of abbreviations in the publishing industry (like SASE, D&A, and such). The AW Dictionary is more about abbreviations you'll find typed here on the Board, but not ones used by publishers/agents.

Google is such a wonderful thing. I had no idea what BIC or OT (O/T) was, so I looked it up. Good tip for anyone one can't find an abbreviation or acronym in the links listed above. OT means off-topic, right? :D

I've always thought it was If I Recall Correctly, but that's not much of a difference anyway.

OK, I've looked it up. The Internet Acronyms Dictionary lists both Recall and Remember as options. It also lists more acronyms than I've ever seen online!

NIP - Novel In Progress

Sorry, know this is an older thread that I pulled out. I just thought this was funny, as I'm usually on parenting message boards, where NIP means "nursing in public".

I really had to do a double-take. I haven't seen that one used as much around here as WIP, but I think I'll giggle every time I see someone use NIP. MS also stands in for "morning sickness". See, it isn't a bad idea to have an abbreviation dictionary on a particular forum!

It strikes me that to spend this much space, time and energy in defining (and inventing) acronyms is to defeat their intended purpose. What's so difficult about typing "in my opinion", or "main character"?

caw.
