And to Sharon Mock for posting this.

I have found my way again!

The idea of index cards - well, coloured post-it notes in my case - worked wonders and my faith in the storyline has been renewed!

Be careful with post-it notes. The adhesive isn't always as effective as you think, especially after being moved around a few times.

Coming from a consulting background, we have used post-its for a lot of hands-on, touch-and-feel brainstorming events, and a few always fall off when you leave them be (especially in high humidity). A bit of tape is enough when you need a more permanant location for the notes.

Thanks for joining me out here in this thread. It was getting cold and lonely :)

Yep! I found an old pin board and ended up securing the post-its with pins too. (I had no luck finding multi-coloured index cards though admittedly, I didn't look too fiercely. There's got to be an Aussie place online out there when I can get them, surely.)

I quickly converted to bulletin board and push pins, after I had about 75 cards neatly laid out on my dining room table and my cat did a flying leap onto and off of the table, scattering all those cards to the four winds.

Also, once I'm completely satisfied with the structure of a piece, I then number the cards. I just don't trust that cat!

Cats are great, aren't they? I had to move to plastic colored pushpins because my cat ate one of those flat gold ones - not a good few days in our house!

Well, my day is made! :D

I'm glad somebody else got use out of my experimentation. It really did help me make sense out of what started out as a complete mess of a zero draft.

Colored cards.

I've used index cards, but I never thought of color coding them!
What a great idea, Sharon!

Index cards totally made my outline. I colour-coded the storylines, to make sure I balanced the two plot elements well enough.

And as far as organising them - I have a large, blank wall in my apartment. I blu-tacked the index cards to the wall and had a great time rearranging them! (My husband had a better time laughing at me though :) )

I don't remember the names but I know there are a few storyflow/structure programs that do the same exact thing except on your computer.

If you're interested, the Writer's Digest Bookclub would probably be a good place to start looking. I think they might have some of them there.
