Small pub advances

Advances are common in most publishing companies, even small ones. Some people look at it like this: even if the advance is so small it's just a token payment, it shows that the publisher is committed to spending its own resources to seethe author's book succeed. However, I know of a couple of fine authors who have gone with small houses that didn't pay advances, too.
