Basically, Liz Jones is of the opinion that all female bloggers are lazy, unemployed, negligent mothers who are somehow letting the side down or something, and who have nothing better to talk about than thier kids and cupcakes.

No mention of the fact that Jones herself is, essentially, a blogger with nothing better to talk about than her 18 cats and celebrity handbags.

I'd never read Liz Jones before, but I read both of her columns linked in this thread and a couple others, and had just the opposite reaction. It's supposed to be self-deprecating humor, combined with rather obvious link-bait, right? She's making fun of herself--or the character she's pretending to be. And the link bait worked! She got a link, some buzz and a few more readers.

The way I read it, no one can actually be that self-absorbed, self-entitled and clueless, so she has created a character, that admittedly might be an exaggerated version of her real self, and is writing in character, playing dumb to entertain and especially to stir people up. The writing is witty, sly, pretending to be self-centered but actually cleverly all about the reader, trying to evoke just the right reaction from the audience.

Here's her road rage. Hilarious! But no more real than a stand-up comic's patter.

If she really is just naively writing honestly about herself--and I don't think she is--she lucked into being born the one-in-a-million, with the perfect personality that people would love to hate.

She won the personality lottery, as far as promotional potential goes.

It's still hard for me to believe that the subtle jibes in her columns, making fun of herself, that we get but the author supposedly doesn't, are really, truly clueless and spontaneous and not deliberately placed. I wonder if people are being blinded by anger, taking her columns as serious commentary rather than reading them as humor the way I did, and the way I thought they were meant to be read.

Still, taking her columns as humor rather than serious commentary to get angry about, I'll repeat: if she's really that innocently clueless and all that parody just flows from her keyboard unconsciously, she also won the personality lottery as a humorist.
