I named one of my main characters after a brand of sour cream. I was wondering if anyone else had pulled off something that silly. 
What is the silliest place you ever took a character name from?

I've created place names by putting together random syllables from the CDs on my music rack. "Dorush" came from the band Rush and something else I can't remember right now. I also take names of existing cities and flip the letters around until they sound exotic. "Mentockras" came from "Sacramento". The main city in my story is "Carpadeem", based on "Carpe Diem". I figured "Seize the Day" was an appropriate sentiment for a capital city.
As for character names, I think the silliest origin was Marvin, though thankfully the character has evolved beyond it. I got this image in my head of a fighter in plate armor tiptoeing down a back alley wearing a pink tutu because they were all out of boots of silence. The title is "Marvin the Magnificent and the Tutu of Toughness". Someday I'll figure out the rest of the story...

Thessa which is taken from the books in the Bible Thessalonians. I was too scared to use Thessalonica which I think is rather beautiful.

Pepper McIlhenny. In my story, he was an aging former college baseball star pitcher.
I got the name while looking at a bottle of Tabasco Sauce. The company is named McIlhenny and well, it's made from peppers.
Sounded like a cool sports name to me.

One of the main characters in one of my books is a girl-friend's name backwards. Another character was simply the way the letters came out of the scrabble bag

Two people who really pissed me off had their names scrambled and reformed into two new names given to characters who are now pissing off my lead character in a story--yes, they will pay for it.
Occasionally, I have anagramed my own name or the name of a friend.
I once lifted a place name and it became a character in my first novel.
And of course, I collect odd names when I see them. Used to carry a little notebook full of them.
Lord Donal, from Donaldson. I was trying to think of a name while sitting at the computer and looked over the back of the books on the bookshelf. Saw one of the Thomas Covenant books and chopped off part of the last name to make it fit.

Your girlfriend's name wasn't Anna was it?
When I originally wrote my current WIP, I had a fairie-type creature (a nasty, ball-busting one) and I wanted to come up with my own name for it.
I saw a personalized license plate while I was driving to work one day and had one of those YES! moments. It really fit him/it well.
I've since completely rewritten the story, sans this creature, Alas, I can't find the paper I wrote the name down on, so it's lost to history.
Oh well.
