I've wondered for a while what a video game that tried to emulate a romance novel would be like. I was imagining this in a more serious way, but today I stumbled over a hilarious take on it. The game is called Coconut Queen, here's a link to a site with a 1 hour free trial (no I'm not affiliated with either the game or the retail site):

The basic concept: you are a female accountant for a company that sells fruit. You notice a financial problem with the island supplying the fruit and report it to your boss. Your boss says, actually we own that tropical island, we need to send someone there to sort it out, would you like to go? You go and when you get there the locals are all male (?) and immediately declare you queen (??) and the male voice acting is marvelously Fabio-ish. Of course you give all the orders and your workers say things like "nothing would please me more, my queen" and "I live to serve your every need"... I was cracking up the whole time.

Dating sims are a pretty popular genre in visual novels. In fact, we have a thread for free one called Katawa Shoujo that a lot of AW members have enjoyed over in the Game sub forum. I highly recommend it.

Such games are generally more popular in Japan than the West, though, and the audience tends to be male rather than female. There are a lot of yaoi ones that are pretty popular with female gamers, though.
