Yesterday I got hit with a virus that froze the Bios of my laptop. It restarted, showed the start up screen with the options to press F2 or F12 (but they didn't work) and then the screen went black. And it stayed there.

I just got Windows 7 to install yesterday but had not done so yet. The virus prevented me reading the DVD Drive as well. So I have a USB stick that I made bootable to install a version of Linux I wanted to try, and tried booting off that. Still would not read.

Finally, after being up till after 3 am, I found message board posts that suggested I take out the battery, unplug the power cord from it, hold in the power button for 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back in and turn on without the battery.

It worked and got me into my operating system.

Then I downloaded the most recent Bios from the laptop website, made a boot-able disk to install them, and the problem is solved.

I'm posting this as a possible solution if anyone else experiences it.

The solution only worked for about half the people that had the issue. I read about 50 message board posts on various websites before I found it and tried it.

On a side note...
The Linux version I tried was Zorin 5.2, a free operating system. It was very, very easy to install and looks like windows, but runs 2 times faster.

My only complaint on it was that it didn't run my favorite game, although there is a way...I just have not learned it yet. Love the OS though. I might keep it as a second OS to boot in in order to write...keeps the distractions at bay.

The Black Screen is an awful trend in viruses. I managed to recover two PC's that got it. But it was a full day of work to do it. Each PC.

You're going to need a Windows Emulator (most likely) to get your game to run in Linux. I think Wine is the most popular one.

Of course, with virtual machines(VM) so common of late, you *could* run Windows as a VM inside Linux.
