New semi-pro zine Fantastic Frontiers has just advertised on the Paying Markets forum (http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=242369).

The rates seem fine for semi-pro, and the zine appears to be a new one. The website says "coming June 2012" and has a web form requesting talented individuals to join up. There are no names on the page, no indications of who (if anyone) Fantastic Frontiers may be affiliated with.

Does anyone have any information this magazine?

The webpage (http://fantasticfrontiersmagazine.com/) does appear to be fairly professional and neat. It just doesn't tell me anything. The WhoIs on the domain names Amber Knutson as the owner of the domain, but that's a common enough name that my GoogleFu fails to discover much about Amber.

They apparently also run Stranger Worlds, which looks amazingly like Fantastic Frontiers.

For something that's supposed to debut in June, they don't have a lot of information.

If anyone has been accepted by them, I'm interested in hearing what their contracts are like and what rights they are seeking.

Do they allow reprints, or only want non-published fiction?

What kind of publishing experience do the people involved have?

There are other questions, but I'd rather wait to ask them until someone responds with answers to the current questions.

Any help appreciated. Thanks,

I'm curious too. I have two stories set to send, but I'd like to know a little more even if just to address the cover letter to a person.

I noticed this on the submissions page:
Fantastic Frontiers Submissions Guidelines said:
We don't accept submissions that have excessive violence, swearing, or nudity, neither do we accept pure horror.
Nudity? What if my characters are completely naked, but I just don't mention it?

Manuel,

See the paying markets thread from this publisher for an answer to your question by the publisher. Basically, they don't want erotica. If the nudity were rated G or maybe even PG it would be fine.

Good comments

Hello everyone,
I'm the Editor in Chief of Fantastic Frontiers and, let's see if I can answer some of your questions.
Fantastic Frontiers Magazine is a new start up online magazine. We've been in the process of putting this magazine together for the past year and are working on getting everything out on the website for our big launch in June - expect MUCH more on the website in May when we start actively advertising and promoting the website, forum, and magazine's launch.
The magazine doesn't pay employees yet, so that we can pay for submissions - since, we want to publish the best Speculative Fiction. Because of this, though, we have other jobs - which sadly takes time away from the magazine and website.
I am also the creator. My name is Amber Knutson and I'm a graduate student - in my second master's degree actually - at Iowa State University's Journalism and Mass Communication program. My first degree was from SDSU in English. I've worked at a printing company, been published, edited all types of writings, love SF, and wanted to work on something important at ISU and beyond. As such, I decided to start this magazine. I wanted to do something with what I love and became more and more inspired by the old SF magazines, contemporary comic books, and ipads and kindles. I developed the concept for this magazine before starting at ISU, and decided to go there based on their magazine developing courses. I began work with Stranger Worlds and, for legal reasons, had to develop a new name, which is where Fantastic Frontiers has come from.
Reprints work on a case by case basis.
We are getting all of our contracts put together now, so I'll have answers on that in about a week.
We are not affiliated with any company as of yet except our own LLC.
And, I welcome all questions and comments. I especially welcome all "good luck" comments - thank you for those!
~Amber Knutson

Thanks for sharing the info with us, Ms. Knutson. It's great to hear that there's some industry experience/editing chops behind this new project.

Do you have a rough idea of what your timetable is for responding to submissions? It's not currently mentioned in the guidelines.

Thanks, and best of luck!

But nothing since. No activity after Oct. '12.
