Anyone read the sol stein book about how to write a novel and can give me an idea of how good it is?

I haven't read How to Grow a Novel, but I have read Stein on Writing and consider it one of the best books ever on writing.

As how-to books go, they're fine, but only if they suit the way you write, and the way you conceive a novel. Nearly all how-to books are writer specific, meaning they fit the person who wrote them perfectly, but probably won't work for anyone else who just naturally goes about things in a different manner.

They're certainly worth reading, but don't take them as Gospel, and don't do anything in either one just because Stein says you should. If they match the way you work and think, if what they advise works well for you, then fine. If they don't match the way you work and think, move on to something else.

I think the idea should be to find how-to books that are specific to the way you work and think.

I certainly agree jamesaritchie! I like to read tips and advice, mostly when I should be putting pen on paper, but I don't take them as gospel, because if you do, you'll never develop your own voice and original way of thinking!

They certainly are helpful, but we, ourselves, are the best teachers we could ever have!:Lecture:
