I'm trying to figure out the genre's for my four novels.Don't be mad. Please. If I'm asking too much, forgive me. Just. . .maybe just give me your take on one. Any feedback is welcome.
My first is GINGERSNAP. Written almost entirely as stream-of-consciousness, told by four different narrators.
Part One: A writer with a death wish has an epiphany: she must write a book about a writer with a death wish who has an epiphany, she must write a book. . .the problem is, the lady has a nasty case of writer's block. She's searching through old stuff she wrote and writes a bunch of crazy new stuff. Finally, she has an epiphany and writes a novella that's nothing like she planned to write, but much of what she's written is in there.
Her novella is Part Two: The story of two strangers who are compelled to tell the story of a little girl who went missing years before. One is a young woman who fancies herself a writer (she isn't). She rents the house the girl lived in. The other is a man who knows what happened to the girl; he was there and it's tearing him apart.
Part Three: Parts One and Two are actually the latest and greatest from a famous author who writes novels about murder. Turns out, he's a secret psychopath who kills people and writes about it. . .it started years before when he came upon a little girl. . .
Book 2: TWINKLE TOES
Written in first person, this novel takes place in a jail cell over 10-1/2 hours. A kid arrested for DUI is placed in a holding cell with a drifter who might just be a pathological liar, or worse, or much worse. . .They play a game of Q & A to pass the time and questions and answers become ever more disturbing. Did the guy do everything he said he did? The truth is revealed 14 years later when a package arrives in the mail.
Book 3: MY FRIEND MIKE
Written in first person, this novel takes place over the course of about 4 months. A young woman wakes up handcuffed to a hospital bed, accused of murdering her stepfather, a man she doesn't remember. In fact, her memory loss is significant. A judge sends her to a psychiatric facility specializing in Dissociative Disorders. She has one month to regain her memory. Can she? Doctors think, maybe. . .but her friend Mike knows she's not ready to remember. When she is, he'll tell her everything, but truth always comes at a cost.
Book 4: CHERRY
I'm uncertain of the genre for this one. . .it takes place over one year. A lonely, twice-divorced college professor inexplicably falls for an incredibly sweet, clueless, possibly insane young male prostitute with a death wish. He thinks he has to die the day before he turns 19 so he will alway be his dead mother's son. The professor finds himself on a mission to save the kid. . .but who really needs saving? Told in first person by the professor as journal entries.
So, there you go. Any ideas as to genre? Writing queries is torture because I'm not sure what to tell agents.
