I used to be a Sony fanboy, but there are quite some things that bug me about the incoming thingie.

First, no backwards compatibility at all. I could understand that with PS One games, a lot of which can be found as classics in the PSN. But the PS2 classics? The PS3 has amazing games, and they're not even that old!

Second, why all the rage against used games customers? It's not the second customer's fault if he caught an expensive game at a bargain because the original owner traded it in.

Third, all the good things are only about technical stuff. The PS3 is already wonderful, as the Uncharted series can testify. Shiny things might make some people drool, but I'd prefer better games over better graphics. And less rushed development, the producers of Mass Effect 3 forgot to add an ending.

I get you. I defended the PlayStation when no one else would, like anyone would when some else tells you your girlfriend is a blast-ended skank. But I dumped Nintendo for the same reason.

It's almost as if they want us to keep buying piles upon piles of outdated consoles rather than updating the current ones like a pile of used degraded skanks you never even use anymore and I think I forgot where this metaphor was going.

Didn't the PS3 come out not too long ago? I haven't played consoles in ages and don't plan to anytime soon.

Keep in mind this was just an unofficial leak. The system is nowhere close to coming out on the market.

That used game bs is insane. Why would Sony even care about whether people are playing new games or used games on their hardware. Either way, they profit.

Heard about this. As far as I can see, there's no reason for me to upgrade from my original PS3. I don't play online multiplayer (can't stand them), and everything I've read thus far says that it would only screw over used games players that go online would be affected.

Regardless, I think it sucks since I'm apparently in the minority in my preference. I understand the concern against piracy, but why alienate your customers? I buy both, but I like having the option of selling of games I haven't enjoyed, knowing that someone else will have the option of trying and liking them. Just throwing them away (which is pretty much the only other option I can think of) is just a waste of money. Makes me less inclined to experiment, since the "no-used-games" thing would rule out options like Gamefly.

Though one article I read mentioned subscription games, where you pay for a year of the game and/or any DLC. I think they said Modern Warfare 3 has this option. Not sure about that, since I seriously don't do anything online/multiplayer.

Anyone have experience with this subscription game thing?

Actually, they don't. Sony sells their hardware at a loss, and attempts to make a large chunk of that back by selling software, which they only profit from if it's a new copy sold. Pressure from publishers (including their own publishing label) is where all of this is coming from.

From a game publisher's standpoint, used game sales might as well be piracy. I have some friends in the industry, and have literally been told before, "If you're going to buy used, you might as well just torrent it. They're not supporting us by buying used. They're supporting Gamestop." Pubs/devs see literally zero profit from a used game purchase. Only the retailer gets paid. That's why all of these companies are doing online passes now, where you have to buy DLC just to use online features if you bought a used version of the game.

There may be a retail war on the horizon. Believe it or not, this Sony thing (if it actually pans out) is somewhat of a compromise. What the publishers actually want down the road is discless consoles, so the user will be forced to get the game from their servers. They're telling retailers they could still sell the games, but you'd be buying a card with a redemption code on it. Obviously, there would be no used game sales possible in that scenario.

I don't really keep up with modern console gaming, but my friend mentioned something about the possibility of needing a constant internet connection for next gen consoles, but he could have just been referring to the console that Valve wants to put out. I do see the gaming industry going discless as an inevitability, and I don't really care for it.
