Hairpulling photoshop noob problem...

Ok, so i finished editing my manuscript and it's all ready to go.

Problem is, im anal and i want to do my own cover. So I've designed this great cover but the problem is...

The book title. I am using drop shadow effects and gradient bevel/emboss effects in the text, but when i try to place the text over the background layer...its f*ing up my text. it screws with the color of the drop shadow effect so that the shadow under the first word of the title appears to be a different color even though i am using the SAME freaking color. I have googled and checked every turorial and video i can find and i am ready to scream...

Is there some clever person here who can tell me what I am doing wrong? The title is the last dang part of this cover and its seriously making me want to rip my hair out.

My daughters sixteen year old friend helped me fix it :/ geez

also, im sorry if i posted this in the wrong spot. I wasnt quite sure where to post this kind of stuff.

Me too. I was real close to punching my computer

And isn't it just typical that it turns out to be some simple little button i didn't click correctly :/ Four hours i tormented trying to figure out how to fix this problem and some sixteen year old tells me how to fix it less than 5 minutes

I had multilayer clicked instead of color in the layers tab for the particular layer i was working on. lol
