I've noticed on a few blogs I've visited that the name / email / URL has been replaced by a request to log into wordpress if you have an email that's linked to a wordpress or gravatar account.

This means that now my icon links to my gravatar profile, and my name no longer links to my website.

I know it's a small thing, but I know a lot of people find other people's blogs via comments, and forcing them to go to the gravatar page is one more barrier to keep them from visiting mine. Not to mention you now have to click the icon rather than the name in order to get anywhere, so people might not even realize you have an URL.

Is there a way around this? Or a way to make this work better in the social networking sense?

What?! This is so obnoxious! I love Wordpress, but how does this make any sense to them? I haven't noticed, but also haven't checked my blog in a few days. Ugh.

/end rant.

ETA: I know it is a small thing, but few people care enough to click through the profile and comments, for me, are important to getting new visitors.

It's not /all/ wordpress blogs, oddly enough. But some, I'll get:

That email address is associated with an existing WordPress.com (or Gravatar.com) account. Please click the back button in your browser and then log in to use it.

And it won't allow me to use my name / url. Doesn't seem to be doing it on my wordpress blog, but it is happening on some.

http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/you-must-be-logged-in-to-comment is a thread about it, but I can't seem to find an option to keep using that email and link to your site. I really like having my gravatar account and icon and whatnot, but just this minor change is kinda bugging me.

I just checked my blog and at least I didn't get it.

However, Wordpress is started to post advertisements on my blog. Grrr...

Just a question; are these free Wordpress.com blogs, or are they paid Wordpress.org blogs?

My websites are built on the Wordpress framework, but they're mine. I paid for hosting and the domain name. I don't run into any problems regarding unwanted ads, unwanted comment methods, etc. You can get 3 years worth of hosting and domain name for $170. Totally worth it if the freebie option is driving you nuts. :D

I *think* that OneHandedWriters site is a free one; if you look right down the bottom, it says "blog at wordpress.com" (and the favicon is the wordpress logo). Wordpress.com is the free side of Wordpress. Wordpress.org is the paid stuff. It looks like the site's creator went the extra step to buy his/her own domain name, but the site still belongs to Wordpress.

So maybe this IS just a freebie site thing? Interesting, anyhow! ^_^

I use another email address for those sites, but then what happens is that they have this tacky barcode scanner graphic icon that gets posted as your avatar with your comment. It's stupid and I hate it, too! Really tacky and feels so not integrated and looks dumb! :(

Ohhh! Okay, maybe! I'm a paid site, and I don't have it, so that could be it.

That's interesting, anyways. I thought all free sites had the domain name.

Anyways! I figured out how to fix it :D

Click the bar up top, log in, go to profile, and add your website in there. It doesn't seem it was there automatically for some reason, despite the fact that I had it there previously on my main profile. I guess they had a separate comments profile.
