I don't know a good spot to post this, so apologies in advance for any in convenience ... I hope this will affect the way you use affect and effect. I took this test and only missed three or the eleven questions. It has affected how I use affect and effect in sentences(for the most part) and, as I mentioned earlier, I hope it affects the way you use them as well. :D

The posted link should take you right to the test. Its only eleven questions if you have the time and good luck.

Yup I'm still rusty :D

My final score was 8/11 I think all of you can do way better than that because you're all experts!

When I'm not sure which to use I swap our affect/effect and replace with influence/result.

The thunderstorm affected my hearing. / The thunderstorm influenced my hearing makes a lot more sense than the thunderstorm resulted my hearing.

She showed the effects of prolonged child abuse. / She showed the results of prolonged child abuse makes better sense than she showed the influences of prolonged child abuse. I suppose the later could work, but it's definitely not optimum in my opinion.

I got 7/11, so my technique isn't the best to follow, I guess.

Use effect whenever any of these words precede it: a, an, any, the, take, into, no. These words may be separated from effect by an adjective.

This probably belonged in the Grammar and Syntax board by the way.

I note they didn't have one where they use 'affect' as a noun.

"Something about the patient's affect seemed off to me."

I thought the distribution of answers would be closer to 50/50, it's pretty skewed there so probably doesn't teach people who're unusure about it

8/11.

Affect v. effect has always been the most confusing grammatical issue for me.

Same. Along with who and whom, although after a lot of thought I can usually discern which one is right. I think I've gotten lay/lie down almost perfectly. At least until someone finds me a quiz and I discover how terrible I really am. Lol.

9/10 I got the second question wrong because the correct answer sounded funny to my ears.

hmm. Almost every answer was 'effect'. Strange quiz.

I noticed this as well.

I also scored 11/11. I guess I must just have a good handle on those particular words, because I honestly didn't even have to give a second thought to any of the answers. The only one that I could see as being moderately tricky for people was number 7.

I got an 8 out of 11 too. And that's with effect/affect usage notes that I printed out and taped to my wall in front of my face. :e2smack: :e2thud:
I have always been scared of those words.

Buying lies and stealing jokes.
Final Score: 9/11

Honestly, that was lucky. A vs E is one of those I sorta grasp, but not wholly. I just go by ear/if it sounds right.

I missed two, because the effect of the blue background of that fun little quiz affected me in very weird way. :)

or, did the affect of the blue background effect me? :D

Or, am I just being silly?
