I know the length of the sample is set automatically, but is there any way to alter it? I just posted a short story (with the idea of making it free as often as I'm able), but my sample consists of the interior cover, the title page, and the copyright page! I'd like to have at least the first page or two of actual text.

If you add text or images at the back, it will increase how many pages in the front are viewable. Some people have taken to putting their copyright information, dedication, link to their website, etc. in the back just for this purpose when a work is short.

I considered adding the first chapter of my upcoming novel as promotional material, but it didn't seem right to have 20 pages of promo included with a ten page short

I got around it by adding a brief sample to the "about the book" section, just so people can get a sense of the story before downloading it.
