I've been recently reading the Dirk Gently novels and enjoying Adams' work.

I'm looking for some other authors with similar styles, themes and genres as the Dirk Gently approach.

There aren't any really; there's a small bit of overlap with P. G. Wodehouse, but it is tiny.

Doug was one of a kind. You might look at the rest of his work--scripts (esp. for Doctor Who and Red Dwarf) and Hitchhiker's Guide, and Last Chance To See.

Definitely read everything else by Adams. I used to read the Hitchhiker Guide books while waiting at the bus stop as a kid, and get all sorts of funny looks because I was just sitting there laughing to myself.

Not saying this book is like Adams, but if you like quirky humor and are looking for other authors to read (if you have in fact read all of Douglas Adam's work), you might try Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

Pratchett is also the closest match I can think of for Adams' humour.

I cannot recommend Adams' 'Last Chance to See' enough. (To echo previous posts yet again.) It does not have the rather absurd humour of Gently or Hitchhiker's (of which I am not that much a fan) and it's not fiction, but it remains by far my favourite of his books.

I always thought the Stainless Steel Rat novels by Harry Harrison had a quirky sense of humor to them as did the Hitchhiker's Guide books.

Many thanks. It seems like such a great shame and also testimony to the depths of talent that Adams' had.

I'm by no means a Pratchett veteran having only really read stand alone novels at sporadic times during the time line and throughout my own readership life and was trying to steer clear of him.

Incidentally I attempted reading Dark Side of the Sun and found it needlessly complicated and overly self satisfying.
